When I start Jiggly from cold, the Engine is really really loud... It's not a mechanical rattle, or Knock, it it just the clacky sound of a diesel engine, but almost painfully loud. A lot louder then my T2.

She runs a dream, lots of power, everything as you would expect, just very loud when cold.

Anyone know why?

What grade engine oil is it using and have you checked the oil level?
Mine used to be very loud when cold using 10w 40 Semi Synthetic, changed it to Mineral and it was fine

Loud engine noise on start up.

Have you replaced the oil filter recently ?

Does the oil light go out quickly ?

I had an issue when I replaced my oil filer with a cheap one from Milner's Off Road the internal valve was leaking so oil drained out when vehicle stood. New filter cured mine.

Is the oil pressure release valve sticking slightly open I assume there is one somewhere they are a steel cylinder type thing - spring loaded. Wear or muck can cause problems when they stick on some engines?

In the short term instead of waiting for the glow plug light to go out before you crank her turn the engine over straight away. This will pump oil round the bearings before she starts thus reducing the initial clatter.

As has been stated by others is it the right oil if it's too thin might be the cause.

Are you using diesel might be worth putting some 2T oil in the fuel, if it is compression related this will lubricate the piston rings and raise the compression a tad thus reducing the initial piston slap.

How long does the noise go on for is it less than half a minute it could be some of the above. That's my 2p worth of initial thoughts.

Was that one of the Blue and White Boshi oil filters by any chance?

Bang on it was a free one that came with the r3mR when we bought it !

I know I have posted about it before - it's an age thing repeating what I have said before - drives the Boss mad ! lol

Thanks for the replies, I have not had a chance to do oil etc yet, so have no idea what is in it, or how old, but it does have the right amount in. I don't think it is wear related, in that it carries on for several minutes until the engine is hot. Let it stand a cool a bit, then restart and it is nowhere near as noticable.

I will be doing the oil etc, so will be interesting to see if it does make a difference though.

Replaced the oil with 15/40 mineral oil, and a Unipart oil filter... made no difference to the noise....

It sounds like it comes from the Injectors, a sort of Pinging cracking sound, just like a cold diesel engine makes, but is very loud.

I will get some injector cleaner and run it through, see if that helps.

I'm with macbethial on the points above. Especially try 1:200 ratio 2 stroke oil (mineral type not synthetic!) for at least several tank fills as this will clean out the fuel system gently as well as quietening the combustion noise. Morrisons is the cheapest (£4 per Liter). The cost works out at approx. 2P per Liter of fuel which is easily covered by the better consumption. That's my experience anyway.
Note that Terranos are apt to imitate trackter engines as normal!

If it sounds mechanical a sort of chi chi chi chi chi chi.... try gently pouring some water over the fan belts, but stand back, lol....

takes 10 seconds lol.

I think I have worked hthis out, my car has sound proofing on the bonnet, Suz's car does not... lift the bonnet on mine and it is much louder...

Wow Nissan cheap skated badly on the T2 after 1999.
