This is hopefully a common problem and easy to fix..Got a 2.7tdi with massive power loss.Have cleaned the maf no change, hav changed the maf and got power back for about a minute and then lost power again. But if i switch engine off and restart power is back for another minute. Can anyone help?

mine did that when it took in a tiny amount of water, is your air filter wet ?
have you tried no air filter ?

mine was like full excellerater and anly 1.500 rpm i beleive its emergency mode the ecu sets it to this to protect the engine when there is a fault

Havn't tried that will do tomorow but when i changed the maf all seemed ok with the filter.Got the maf off ebay any chance its a duff.?

downloads

have you tried any of the downloads from the top of every page. there are 2 downloads for the maf.

you could try running with no air filter or air filter box open although i wouldnt do either of these for hours on end (just to test)

have you concidered using your original maf unit and re diagnose your original problem?

discribe your loss of power ?

Loss of power is best described as turbo switched of on the flat and hand brake on up hill.I will test the old maf as suggested. Thanks for the reply

You may have a dodgy Maf :? I got mine from Nissan for £45 but if it packs up in 12 months it'll be going back for a replacement

based on that i would guess its not in emergency mode , as i say mine would not rev over 1500rpm no matter how hard i tried.
switched off removed air filter (wet) re start back to normal dried air filter and replaced when dry

is yours revving like normal just less power or will it not go any higher than a certain point

could it be bad fuel ?when did you fill up last did it hapen then or soon after ?

have you checked the fuel lines fuel supply for cracks leaks, fuel filter it could be that simple

is it turning over starting well (quickly) or is it turning and turning and turning before fireing ?

try doing the fault code download[/b]

Ok..
Did the fault download and..

Put link in and the ml flashes without waiting 2 secs and with the link in place.code comes up as 95 and now i am confused because no code ref.. what next?

MAF - mass airflow sensor. This is present on all the TDi's and serves to tell the ecu the volume of air that the engine is injesting.

From this and the throttle pedal position sensor (PPS), the ecu can calculate engine load, and after cross referencing the engine speed from the crank sensor (CAS), it applies suitable fuelling and injection timing.

Its quite a crude and basic system on the tdi's (actually Bosch EDC 15 on most) but works well enough.

Not that some earlier cars use a Zyxel injector pump, and not the bosch VP30- these are easy to spot by having an Hitachi MAF, and a Rectangular plug for the injector pump. (not circular)

The TD's use an entirely mechanical system.

Ok,

Did read the comments about the air filter and thought not a chance.
Just unhooked the air filter and little improvement.took the filter out and it pulls like a steam train..

The filter was replaced 4k ago and it seems clean and bone dry.So how can it make such a difference ?

Reset the ecu and drove and then looked for fault codes.it still says 95 but on the paperwork i have their is no such code.

Can i drive the car for short distance with out a filter..I live miles from anywere its about 40 mins to the nearest parts shop.

Just like to say thanks for everyones help.

yes you can drive with no air filter, just bare in mind you could suck in anything from a fly to a leef , you will also notice the turbo will come in just a little earlier too, i drove for a couple of days with no filter, and no problems , keep away from water dust so no off road stuff,

i would just use it only to go buy a new filter, or put the filter in and drive gently until you have a new filter now that you have found this could be the problem

Update.
Spent the mornin in angouleme (nearent city to me)south west France looking for a new air filter. All the places i new were out of stock so ended up at Nissan dealer at 12.05, it closes for dinner at 12.00.

I hav been here for 5 years and this still catches me out.90% of places close for up to 2 hours for lunch.

So no new air filter and home for 1pm.Did the old trick of blowing old filter out with air line and it did the job.Back on monday to Nissan for a new one but happy that my problem seems sorted.

Just like to thank everyone again for helping and at this moment it was the best £10 spent for a long time.
