Hi guys, i wonder if anyone can help please?

Today i was plodding along the motorway at a steady 70mph when i suffered a total loss of engine power.....i managed to coast slowly on the hard shoulder to the next junction.

When i pulled off the motorway onto a layby no matter how much i pressed the accelerator pedal my terrano wouldnt rev about 2000 rpm.
I popped the bonnet and had a look for anything obvious, but couldnt see anything loose or leaking.

So i decided to switch it off and restart it, surprise surprise it fired up straight away and revved as usual without any hesitation....and drove as normal the rest of the journey home

I have to say i am totally confused....

can anyone suggest anything it may be?

get the codes read - there will be a clue.

I suggest pedal sensor, MAF, CKP sensor.

have you been running on veg oil by any chance?

I have fitted a MAF amp to mine, and have been playing with it. Basically, if I wind it up too high, start the car, and try and rev it, it will not go above 1000 RPM. I wound it back a bit, and it seemed to be great, then on the way to fill her up with diesel, she did exactly as you described. Wound it back a bit more and it seems OK now. I spoke to Ray, and it looks like the ECU on mine has some sort of Over Voltage protection, and sticks the engine into limp mode, but I do not get any warning lights on the dash.

As an easy starting place, I would have a look at your MAF wiring, as I also get the same issue, if I switch off the MAF amp with the engine running. You may have a dodgy wire or connection that broke contact when you went over a bump.

My issue that I had recently was probably quite rare however what I did to fix mine was quick and easy so you may want to give it a go :D

I had exactly the same symptoms, when flooring the car I just got plumes of white smoke and also the plunger on my fuel filter primer was sucked down and would not come back up, it turned out that my fuel cap was blocked up which doubles up as a breather

All I did to resolve my issues was to wash the cap out and ran the car for a few miles with the cap off :D

Let us know when you find out what's wrong :D

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.

In answer to the fuel; no i arent running veg....just diesel

I will give an update if and when anything else happens

Cheers
stephen

fuel blockage comes to mind on the suction side, turning the engine off could have allowed the block to drop off, has exactly the same on another motor and turned out the tank gauss filter had a lot of debris that blocked it, do not know if the T2 has a tank filter but the inlet banjo on the main filter has given me problems, Rick
