i think i have a problem

drove from north norfolk to west wales yesterday. popped in to see sharkie and pick up my hubs, carried on as normal. had no problems all day. still in wales now, went to start her this morning, all fine until i drove up the hill out of the uni campus and the engine was slightly lumpy. then when i went to pull out at a junction she died. i tried restarting, and the rev counter was all over the place. the engine was sluttering and jumping. after turning it over sveral times, she fired. once applied slight acceleration, all i get is more sluttering, the battery light comes on and so does the glow plug light, plus i get white/blue smoke from the exhaust. she died several times, and again i struggled to get her started. the air flow meter is hitaichi, gave that a clean not so long ago. ill try changing the fuel filter, but if that doesnt work, i dont really what to do!!

btw, mines a '98 2.7 tdi

did these come fitted with a egr valve?

any help is really appreciated

regards, tom

Some of the T2/Mav's are fitted with an EGR valve so I would have a look for it. Sorry have no idea what it could be :?

Mine had similar issues just after I changed the fuel filter, the seal was poor on the seat, letting air in.
It could be air getting into the fuel lines.
Try draining the valve on the bottom of the filter, if air goes in... release the filler cap on the fuel tank. There have been a few problems with this.
After all you have made a long journey.

Try to pump the manual pump on top of the filter.
You could always remove the filter to see if it is full or not!
If air is getting in it could be via the fuel lines.

Good luck.
best regards, Rustic.

White smoke... could be you are burning oil, with a loss of power, could be you have blown a turbo seal...

Sorry, just had a simular thing my self...

ALL FIXED NOW!!

changed the fuel filter, didnt do anything. then i removed the power steering pump, but to get it out of the way so i could access the mini filter and had to undo the battery cable (+ve) and stretch it out of the way. after removing the bolt for the mini filter, it turns out i didnt have one, so refitted the P/S pump, and reconnected the battery cable. however when i went to turn her on, the glow plug light wouldnt come on, and when i turned her off on igntion, she would stay on. i then figured there must be a dodgy connection somewhere. on further inspection of the engine bay, i noticed two small earth cables on the engine had broken off, and were brushing on the engine. i then thought this might be the problem, so reconnected them and everything then worked fine. the long journey must broken them. while on idle, the wires just had a connection, but when i revved the engine, they were loosing it. anyway, all sorted now. they must be earths for the for injection pump and glow plugs. just been out for three hours doing some laning, stunning scenery.

thanks for everyones replys

Hi Tom

Glad you got your problem sorted out...could you describe where these two earth cables are...I want to check mine...I want to make sure they are in good order as I am about to do a 1000 mile round trip..

A pic would be superb

Thanks

Mike

mike

if you look at the engine bay from the from the front, the earths are on the left hand side. if you go upwards from where the starter motor, they are fitted on a small 'lip'. the wires stem from the main cable that runs from the battery down to the starter (and where every else it goes). sorry i cant be clearer.

ill get a picture if you still need it either tomorrow or tuesday
