Hi Everyone,

For the first time since buying the truck in 2008 with 43000 miles, it has broken down (see image below :()

On the way to work on Friday it started to behave a bit strangely when changing gear on the move and pulling away from a standstill. There seemed to be a slight hesitancy in the take up of power followed by a jolt (which is the best way to describe it) once on the move. After a couple of miles, I lost all drive completely and had to coast to a safe harbour.

I suspect the clutch, however, the pedal feels quite normal and I can change all of the gears without a problem although there is now no drive to the wheels at all in either 2wd or 4wd?

I suspect the clutch, but there is an odd clanking noise coming from the part of the gearbox/drivetrain just before it connects to the prop-shaft when depressing and lifting the clutch pedal.

I think this is going to be too big a job for me, so I have asked a local 'small business' mechanic to look at it. In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions then I would be grateful. It has 94000 miles on it and the engine runs perfectly. It'd be a shame to scrap after 50000 pretty faultless miles.

Thanks

Alan

Could be worse mate, it could be a month away from Christmas

I think the gearbox can be slid back on the torsion bars enough for inspection but depends if you want to get your hands dirty or not :nenau

Sounds like clutch centre plate has broken up to me, you cannot slide box back on the torsion bars as you have to remove the X member that the bars fit too, if you want to do it yourself then engine out is best way on the ground, or garage with hoist and box cradle, box out, clutch bits about £100 expect £300 for labour, Rick

not sure about the noise from rear of box, as never stripped a box as yet, but if it turns out to be a broke part here I have spares, Rick

I only meant for inspection, not to actually do the job, when I disconnected the gearbox from the block on the one I broke for parts I was able to slide the gearbox back slightly enough to see inside at least.

If I were to tackle this, I'd do it on the ground and remove crossmember and torsion bars, engine out is ridiculous Rick!!! I've seen a clutch change done on the ground before on a Terrano and I've never known anyone take the engine out

There is a drive chain in the transfer box, but I think that is only for the drive to the front wheels. Maybe someone could confirm that. If not, could it be that?

yes chain only drives front prop, there is a tread on here some place that I did when I modded my transfer box to permanent low, with pics but cannot find it, Rick

Thanks Guys,

Really quick replies, this forum is as great as it ever was, unfortunately, I only post with bad news now due to changes in work and time constraints.

I have spoken to two different small workshops today, both of which do not want the job. One because he has no lift, and the other (who has a lift) says his roof isn't high enough to accommodate the Terrano's height!

Upon explaining the symptoms to 'low roof' he seemed to think the clutch centre plate was to blame, suggesting that the splines may have 'stripped on it?

I am going to try to get a quote from a well equipped independent mainstream garage, and if it is ridiculous (say over £500.00) then I will have to think about doing it myself. I am not scared of the oil, time or grime, but I am worried that I won't be able to manage the weight of the gearbox and associated parts once unbolted?

Regards

Alan

your location is england but where.are you near bexhill on sea if so rick is the man.if he has time.

I would willingly pay Rick to the job, but geography is not on my side (North Bristol), also I understand he is a very busy man as well.

I have to mention the obvious, but the small 4x4 lever goes through a neutral position when going from 4x4 high, to 4x4 low, worth checking the movement through the range, if your vehicle has had a lift, then the movement of this lever is greatly restricted, and needs some surgery, ie cutting etc.
Worth checking, cheap fix lol.

Edit, just reread your original post, you have been into 4x4 low already... forget the above...:doh..

Still valid I think, I remember reading on here that the mechanism is returned by a spring so it could be stuck, Banshee had trouble with his knob I think :D

:lol :lol :lol

Mine was a different issue, it just wouldn't engage 4L the guide had to be removed and encouraged with a hammer :thumb2

Ah i remember now, do think transfer box could cause this problem then?

I would personally say his clutch has gone but yeah could manifest itself in that way, if the transfer box lever drops into Neutral he won't go anywhere

ive done two clutch changes on teranos over the years,a petrol and a diesel.
ive done both by removing the torsion bars and sliding the box back on a jack with a transmission cradle fitted.
took me a weekend to do the first one but the second one was sorted in a day.
it is a big heavy lump but only has to be moved back enough to allow access to change the clutch.
re fitting is a bit of a pig as you have to twist the box slightly to get it to clear but managed on my own.
i also drove the front end up a set of ramps so when the torsion bars are lowered you still have room underneath to work.

There you go!!! I knew the engine didn't need to come out :nenau

OK OK, I must have done close ton 20 clutches for members over the time, and engine out on all, easily done in a day, why you ask, well that box is a very heavy unbalanced lump, and in the process of putting it back it is all too easy to have it slip on the jack or whatever and ruin the centre plate, plus I am not as young and agile as I once was, sure the front diff has to be dropped, but the engine is carried on the hoist at the correct angle all the time, there is no lifting involved so although there may be more operations involved it is far less exertion for me, even the front diff can be held with a separate smaller hoist, so for me this is the way to do it.

If of course I had a higher roof in the workshop and could get a T2 up to full height then I could smooth my rough concrete floor and make a G/Box cradle on wheels but not to be, Rick
