Hi All,

Well, yet again, she has died. Last week, i suspected 4 x failed Glow Plugs, so replaced all 4 with new NGK items and also triple checked that they are the correct TD-only ones.

After replacement, she fired up ok with v. little smoke and i have used her 4 or 5 times since and has cold started ok. Not amazing though, with a fair bit of cranking and smoke has returned........

Now, she is turning over, but will not catch at all. I am rapidly losing patience as i do not have the time to keep on top of this and cannot continue to use an unreliable motor..... so last ditch attempt before she is hung drawn and quatered (well, part-exed, scrapped or ebayed!!)

1. Could it be the Mini Filter?? I have not checked this. Has new Air and Fuel filter on (2k miles / 2 months ago).

2. Is air getting into the system?? The metal fuel pipes are not exactly new, but no leaks and i have already repaired with new hose at the rear end.

3. Anything else i am clearly missing???

I need to get her going!! Really dont want to scrap it at all. Trouble is, she runs like a dream and returns me 28-30 mpg all day long when running!! Also, fires up at the slightest touch of the key when warm.....

Please help..... save the Terrano

hi cheshiref1.
sorry you still having problems .
one thought when you say she turns over .ARE YOU GETTING SMOKE .
If not on top of fuel pump there is an electric fuel shut off .
IS IT THIS THATS PLAYING UP .get someone to turn key while you hold onto the plunger you should feel it pulse.if its not working take it out remove the plunger and re fit.
you will have to stall engine to stop it . at least it will rule it out .

Hi Ian,

Many thanks for your reply..... I'm going to give this a go. I have no smoke at all on turn over, hence my thoughts around fuel not actually getting into the system......

I dont have a manual, so dont actually know where the fuel pump lives, but will find it no doubt. Unfortunately today, i am by myself so will strip down anyway, along with trying to do the Mini-Filter.....

Then take it from there!!

I'll report back later and may be after some more advice!!! Thanks again.

Had a lot of problems starting mine discovered problem was to do with air in system from fuel filter /housing disconected fuel filter and put inline filter in to see what hapened never had problem starting it since then might be worth trying

UPDATE -

Managed to get to Banjo bolt to see if mini filter..... none. Fuel is being delivered here ok (pump the primer on top of the Fuel Filter housing and it pumps out).

Slackened off 1 & 2 injectors and small amount of fuel coming through on crank - not massive amount though! Is this supposed to spray large amounts of fuel out on crank??

Every time i crank the motor, the fuel pump primer goes soft, indicating air in system. I will try an inline fuel filter to see if i can get her going on that!! Good tip.....

Failing that, could it be air getting in via the fuel lines, even though i have no leaks?

I'll try the in-line and let you know!!

hi cheshiref1.
you have been busy .
have you tried pumping up to pressure then crank while someone keeps pumping .it should fire if not slacken no 1 injector and try again.

Hi Ian - thanks for this tip - tried and failed!!

I have drained the fuel tank and put fresh Diesel in and checked the sender/return unit. There was some crap in the tank, but all ok. Diesel is getting to the filter (and through ok using the hand pump) ok.

When i put an inline filter in, the diesel does NOT seem to be passing through - also, with no.1 injector cracked-off and cranking, there is only a tiny amount of fuel coming through. This is the same with/without the inline filter - just easy to see what is happening with an inline.

How does the fuel pump work on these?? It is not electronic is it, so does it only operate on cranking??? I am really just about to give up on this. But i hate being defeated!!!

I think i am at the stage now where i have checked EVERYTHING and the fuel does not seem to be being delivered to the injectors in a large quantity...... is this blocked / failed injectors???? Blocked throttle body (or whatever they are on a diesel)......

Any last-ditch thoughts from anyone??? Thanks for all your help so far. I do want to get her running now as i seem to have done a major check of everything on the bloody car - and it all seems pretty good!!!

Cheers.

hi you did say last ditch efford didnt you.
go and buy some "easy start" take out the air cleaner ,get someone to crank the engine while you spray a LITTLE BIT into air duct "straight into engine" IT WILL START ON THIS AND HOPEFULLY PULL FUEL THROUGH.
WARNING DONT SPRAY TO MUCH OR IT WILL LOCK ENGINE UP .
IF IT DOES GO HAVE A COFFEE AND TRY AGAIN .

PRIME PUMP .PRIME PUMP .PRIME PUMP.
GOOD LUCK.

dead terrano

could it be the fuel delivery sensor or wires?mines acting up at the mo.did the fault checks from the download and came back with this.

cheshiref1,

If you think it is not getting enough fuel, then I would get a gallon can of fuel and a length of tubing, with the can of fuel held up as high as possible, siphon the fuel out of the can and connect the pipe to the inlet of the injection pump. It would be a sensible idea to also pipe the return from the pump in to the can as well, this will rule out a blocked fuel return line. After you have the supply rigged, attempt to start the engine with an injector pipe cracked off to bleed any air out.
There is no fuel lift pump on these motors, the injector pump draws its own fuel from the tank, by siphoning the fuel from a can it will assist with supplying the fuel.

SHE LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8)

A MASSIVE thanks to everyone that posted here. Although it wasnt one single thing that got her working, a combination of them all made me test everything to the last T and rule things in and out and have a serious think about it....... seriously - THANKS!

Long story short, after trying allsorts, i put it down to either the Injectors being blocked, or the injector lines not delivering the fuel. So i took the fuel filter off, filled it with pure Wynns Injector Cleaner and cranked away.... NOTHING...... so, i removed all 4 x injector lines and basically cranked the engine about 20 times (2/3 seconds a time) and in-between each crank, pumped fuel filter by hand. Eventually fresh diesel came thorugh the lines then the Wynns Injector Cleaner.....

I re-assembled all 4 injector lines, cranked again and after 4 or 5 seconds, she fired in a plume of smoke!! Runs like a dream.....

Although i have just realised, this was last night..... at the time of writing this, i havent tried starting her this morning!!!  I have total faith!!!

Good thing is, i now know what state the parts on this car are in as i have removed allsorts and re-fitted. For 142k miles, its pretty good. If she goes through an MOT in late August i might just do the tappets on her..... what more can i say!!!

Goodbye.....

Yep, i got her running and now have just Part-Exed her for a 2.8TD Shogun. I have just noticed more work that needs doing for the MOT (rear brakes / grinding noise), 2 x front tyres needed and possibly welding around the rear seat-belt areas (again - first job looks v poor!).

I have been offered £650 part-ex and i paid £700 for her 3 months ago, nearly to the day and have covered 2100 (not quite stree-free) miles. Ok, i have also thrown £150 of parts and some time at her.

The shogun has 10 Months MOT, a small oil leak (cam cover half-moon seals by the looks of it) and an Auto box  With the Diamon Options Pack, i have all the goodies a man could ever need..... i hope i am not stepping out of the frying pan into the fire!!!

Thanks for your help over here. Glad my £10 went towards keeping up a sterling club..... hopefully see you on a green lane one day 8)

Hi there Cheshiref1.

Hope to see you back again soon.
