Just looked at the pic on the pocuk forum... bugger!!
Unlucky bud, in all fairness to Mitsi I had my 2.8 Shogun for a good 13/14 months and besides replacing a leaky water pump and the dodgy alternator early on (drained the battery when not running) she was great. I bought her with around 130k on the clock and sold her at around 150k, still running strong, just fancied a slightly newer truck (Shogun was a '95) and I'd had my eyes on getting a Y61 Patrol for a while.
Don't know what's available but would have thought there'll be a few Terranos for sale at a reasonable price, might struggle to find anther Patrol very cheap though (should definitely have kept the 4.2!).
For other options I would definitely stay with the Jap makes, might be able to get a Trooper at a reasonable price? I imagine you won't want to go near another 2.8 Shogun/Paj but what about a 2.5? There's a lot about, although it's a timing belt so check/replacement would be the first priority!
Just from a point of interest type of view, your post had me fervently checking for timing chain replacement intervals on the 3.0 Patrol and according to those in the know (ie the Aussies :lol) my engine is a combination gears/chain - timing chain only drives the cam shaft and everything else is gear driven. Consensus is it shouldn't need replacing for a long time, if ever... whoop!
