Ok so now my car seems to have started destroying its second gear box this year with the same symptoms I have had a look at the lay shaft on the old box and sure enough its wobbling around like a good en!

So now the question, Is it just bad luck that the second box (off my old maverick) is now rattling away or should I start looking elsewhere for something else that could be causing the shaft bearing to give way ?

Anybody experienced such bad luck and timing as we are due to go to france in the car in just five weeks time

May be worth checking the spigot bearing in the flywheel, well I say bearing but its actually bronze bush that the nose of the shaft fits in, this will help support the shaft and if worn or missing may put more stress on the gearbox bearings possibly causing it to run out of line.

How easy was it to drop the gearbox Scott? I'm sure I have the same problem - rattling noise in neutral with clutch pedal fully up......I'm thinking a rebuild or refurb...has anyone costed a replacement box? :(:(

well I have started to strip the box and just waiting for the new bearings.

gearbox

A few years ago a mate and I rebuilt a gearbox from a D21 pick up because it rattled and then would not go into gear.

Bits inc bearings a selector and 1 gear (second gear cog was ground down as it had only started to bur over)

Not really a dreadful job once the gearbox was out.

Was quoted £800 @ the time for a supply only second hand box from a maverick.

Believe me you are doing right to rebuild, but get stronger bearings from a bearing factors

Good luck mate hope u get sorted
