Clock law

Contrary to popular belief there is no legislation that criminalises you for changing your speedometer / oddometer reading on your own car for your own reasons.

You can clock your own vehicle as I did as my Missus did not want everyone to know that we once owned a very high mileage vehicle. I just moved the oddometer back to zero and when the MoT came round said it had had a new clock.

When we came to sell the vehicle I just disclosed the true mileage it had covered.

It only becomes an offence if you try to sell the vehicle and claim a lower mileage than the vehicle has covered. You then have offences of Criminal Deception or an offence under Trade Descriptions Act.

Bit more difficult with digital oddometers to achieve as the mileage is also stored in the ECU and it will come up with a conflict. Never had a new enough motor for that to be a problem but there are fixes on the internet to sort the newer speedos.

i'm not doing anything illegal, mine is the lower of the 2 and i did not want to go through the MOT with the higher one on the spare dash, i just wondered do i destroy it but you answered the question thx.
