Largest Mud Tyres on Std. SWB Terrano

Hi All,

Want to get some Mud tyres for my Terrano, at present its on std. Suspension. I was going to go for BFG's.

What's the largest size that will go on without modifications? I've got 15" Steel Rims with 235/75/15 Tyres.

Am considering getting LWB springs on the back and changing Front Torsion bars to suit. Heard that's a simple way of gaining an inch or two in ride height. Is that a good cheap way of doing it or should I just leave it as std.

I am running 31's on my road going motor and are the largest you can go with a standard motor, you can wind the front torsion bars up at the expense of bad angle to your front drive shafts, fitting LWB springs to a SWB will only result in a harder ride, they are no longer, just tougher, to raise the rear you need spacers and longer shocks, then of course you can raise the body off the chassis, Rick

Hi,

Don't want to put any extra stain on driveshafts etc. As the trucks been absolutely great in the six or seven years I've had it. Can't bear to get rid of it as just not worth it.

Think I'll just treat it to a new set of 235/75/15 BFG boots, doesn't get any real serious work anyway, although do fancy trying some green lanes in it.

That's exactly how I started mine mate and from there it just never stops :lol You'll get the bug from that point onwards until you have bondage bars like Alex :lol :lol

I put BFGoodrich AT's on my 15" Maverick Alloys and just tweaked the torsion bar so that it was level with the rear and removed the front mud flaps.

I think I even folded the lip over with a hammer and waxoyled it too for good measure and they never caught after that, they were 31 10.50 R15

Yep, Good old 2.4 Petrol.

Only bought it as it was cheap a few years back after selling a much newer (excuse the swearing!) Discovery TD5 after the Ex. said she didn't like driving it as it was too big, got another car but still needed a 4x4 for Shooting, Fishing etc.

2.4 not too bad, obviously not the Torque of a 2.7 or 3.0 but much better off road than the Disco and still get 25-26 mpg, with all types of driving. It's still only got 62k on it (46 or 48k when I bought it 7 years ago lol)

Only ever replaced a couple of exhaust parts, and a starter motor I think in all this time, apart from regular service items, oil, filters etc. obviously.

Did you get rid of those Deep Dish Steel Rims you were advertising? They looked quite good!!

How did they affect the handling etc? Any Rubbing on the Arches or Anywhere?

May have to think about a set myself, must improve it off-road!!

I've still got them on but you will def need some lip hammering action to ensure they don't rub, they stick nice and wide out of the arches too :naughty :naughty

Mine is a bog standard LWB, the only repairs to the suspension, drive shafts that I have done have been front drop links about three or four pairs, two lower ball joints and last year the front anti roll bar bushes, and they lasted 20 years.:doh

Wear and tear, in my opinion, is directly proportional to the severity of the off roading, how often, and how modded the vehicle is.
So have a boring long and low cost ownership, or the more exciting off road experience. Your choice :nenau

Lol... Very true Rustic!

Just don't get chance to use it much so no point spending loads on it if it just sits on the drive for weeks on end!! So a cheaper slight improvement would be a better idea.

Unless you've got a big bag of money you can give me then I'll get it sorted properly! Lol

your 2.4 petrol far out ways the TD and TDi at under 1500 revs regards torque, I know as have owned both, the TDi comes into its own on higher speed towing, I have any spares you may need, Rick

Well stuck with std. Size, even gave her a wash and bumpers done for good measure before I go find some mud. Lol

Do you think the fronts sagged much, should I get torsion bars adjusted?
