At fairly lowish speeds upto 35mph and in a high gear I am getting deep vibrations ......what I would call labouring the engine vibrations.I am sure I shouldn't be getting these on my Terrano 2 ..Say I hit the 30mph Zone on a stretch of road in my Terrano and want to drive in 5th gear it's almost impossible until I get to say 35 or 40 Mph and the vibrations disappear. This happens in 3rd 4th and 5th at low speeds too.Do any other owners get this problem ....I have done my rear uj's last week (Would there be anything else to look for causing these vibrations)
Is this a trademark of the Terrano
I could drive along in 5th at 30 mph in most vehicles and not have a problem at all.

but a T2 is big and heavy..

pop over we can try mine see if the same

Id suggest zippy is going in the right direction. cant comment on little town cars but most larger vehicles are not meant to be driven in 5th at relatively
low speeds :thumb2

They feel ok but 5th is still really an overdriven type gear. 1 to 4 for driving 5 for cruising or so I was always taught (though six speeds kick that theory into touch :D )

If you have a shot of something like the ecomotive leon youll find its electronics are programed for optimum economy and even though it feels ok at 30 in 5th the indicator tells you to change down so technically I suppose you must be into the using excess fuel through labouring the engine :nenau :thumb2

At the end of the day if it dries fine apart from 30 in 5th the answers there ;):thumb2

TBH it sounds pretty much like mine so I would say it's normal.

Good idea to meet up with Zippy, it help both me and Clivvy when we got together for a similar reason.

Daved is right let the engine spin freely, you will get better mpg and less load/wear on the engine, Rick

vibes

please do not be offended as it is not designed as a criticism

I think you are to higher gear for the speed.

It does not hurt to hit the red line every now and then.

mine does and its an automatic!!!!

these trucks are over 2 tons empty and not designed to be rocket ships

Thats the nature of a terrano, they are all the same, not very flexible. I never use 4th under 40mph driving in town in 3rd, they just do not like going slowly. When I was buying a large diesel I thought it would be flexible and I would'nt have to change gear so often but I was wrong, it's the only thing I dislike about the vehicle. regards bri.

That is why I love my 2.4 petrol, the low down torque is very high, it is a long stroke engine, and I have had the car trailer on with a banger on it and 5th at 30 mph on a flat road is smooth, if I need the extra just hit 4th for a few revs then back to 5th, I am a diesel man through and through and did not want to buy the T2 I have now as it was petrol, but had no quick choice, and now having sampled the diesels no contest, a bit more expensive to run, but by heck does it pull, Rick

Drove an N reg 2.7td maverick yesterday, 30mph in 5th no vibes, grumbling, or labouring, but my T2 does it and it drives the kids & missus mad.
I did ask a similar question recently thinking it might be to do with the rear diff. But listening to it last night I think it's more from the front end, gear box maybe.
The missus says it's coming from the left hand side behind her though, so who knows.
Like Paul said, drive in a lower gear and it doesn't do it, and I think Daved is right about the fuel economy thing too. My mates (very) old Audi 80 had a fuel economy gauge and that showed better MPG if you kept the revs up a bit around town.
If you've ever had a dynograph done on a vehicle it's shows power and torque, which will increase and then drop off as the revs rise. Highest power and torque readings will be in the most efficient rev range, so in theory if you keep within that range you'll be making best use of the fuel. I should add a ? as I'm probably talking out of my armpit.
Regarding the weight of these beasts they might not be as heavy as you think :

From the replies I am getting it looks like I should be using the gears and engine more then................Suppose I am too used to my ole Discovery where I could quite easily drive that in 5th at 30mph.

For something completely different I did notice on my speedo that there is a red line at 30mph ,does this mean anything ??

I'll be in touch Zippy :thumb2

Cheers all

Dave

I have no problems with my Mav 2.7TD 5th at 30 ok on the flat.
I wonder if there is a difference between models.

We should have a vote.
2.7TD vs the later 2.7Tdi's I assume we are all talking diesel, or are the petrol one any different.
Is there a difference between SWB and LWB ?

I agree with comments on the LR's, when I learnt to drive it was a Mini 850, when I was going up hills the instructor shouted..

"You've been driving that**** "Land Rover" again.....
Change down !!!"

Apology regarding using the offensive language L... R.... but as this was a quote from a third party I thought it would be acceptable. No offence meant.

driving

Hi Rustic no offence taken a very valid point

When i got my nissan mistral which was my first jap 4x4x and my first diesel
i hated it until i stopped driving it like a V8 3.9 land rover - once i sussed it out i loved it.
