hi again ,been looking at my g/box problem and have noticed the kickdown cable on the pump is fairly sloppy ,is there a set up on these ?

I'm asuming your gearbox won't kickdown when you progressively depress the accelerator, And the oil level is ok,
and the filter in the gearbox has been replaced?

The cable should feel fairly loose if you give it a gentle tug,

but it should be lightly spring loaded and return, if it snags or doesn't return properly that will have to be checked, for frayed or snagged cable or the spring loaded lever inside the gearbox,

But sometimes it can stretch a bit as it gets older,

There are settings to correctly adjust the cable,

but what i'd do is mark of the cable adjuster first and turn it out, increase the adjustment by half a turn at a time so it pulls the cable a bit further, (don't wind it too far, if it runs out of travel it could damge the lever mechanism in the box,) try it up the road, if it don't make any difference drop it back to were it was, And start worrying about how much it's going to cost you.

the tension on the cable is a bit too slack i feel ,i think its been played with so i woundered where to start as a ref point and to set it up seems the first point
if there is a correct way to set it up.

If you can find out what the settings are from the book it will give you a guidance on cable position, unless one of our members has a manual for auto boxes, It might not be easey to find that info,

Maybe someone has tried to adjust it, Or it was removed for another job, If the cable is really sloppy it isn't going to activate the kickdown valve, Don't let that put you off,

All that cable does is move a lever in the gearbox that in turn opens and closes a valve allowing fluid to pass through,

It isn't detrimental if it's not set spot on, As i mentioned on previouse post, cables can stretch so settings can alter,

All it has to do is open the valve when the accelerator is almost at the end of it's travel,

the same rule applies to most automatic gearbox's with kickdown cables,

Just try to tighten the adjustment a bit at a time.
