Any welder is only as good as the person using it.. :thumb2

as said good for rock sliders and other fabrication work not a bad boy for £50 quid ok for 415v but doubt you have a plug for that at home get some steel and practice makes perfect:lol

What about the fact the min-max knob doesn't seem to stop turning in, or out ? do these usually have a set number of turns and a thread they travel on ?

I will open her up tomorrow and have a look

What about electrodes ? mild steel I presume but what thickness ?

Cheers

when you open it up the little window on the side with the amp scale should have a marker that moves up or down when you screw the knob either way best way would be to get some rods mild steel 2.5mm or 3.2 i would use and see if it works
i would use a welding supply place rather than machine mart and the such as they will be cheaper

Dump the welder also your mate and get you self a mig welder.
Laurie ash:lol

It's a pretty heavy duty welder tbh, u find a mig this hardcore for £50

Just need to practice ;)

When you get your rods keep them dry, I keep mine in my boiler casing, :thumbs
they seem to soak up damp and the flux falls off:doh

That looks a good solid stick welder. But for motors you realiy need a Mig for clean welds and thin metal. You ain't going to get one for £50 but best of luck, you'll find one sooner or later. David.

Well it works fine, but I am shocking :lol

Blew 2 fuses just doing this, rod kept sticking, was at about 100 amps on 70v with 4mm rod

Anyway, will get some rods and steel plate, and set myself a bench up at a decent working height (2 plastic tresels and a bit of wood, outside in case it goes up lol) and practice striking an arc and doing some nice steady lines

Holding the mask with one hand is a nightmare so might have to invest in a proper helmet. What are those cheap speedglass copys like on ebay ?

Also, any advice on welding butt joints in 50x50x3mm box section ?

4mm what you welding half inch plate? 1.5 to 2.5 more than enough for what you need, Rick

invest in a speedglass helmet or similiar as will free up your other hand a tip i was shown by an old fitter once was when you start with a full length rod hold the rod near the end with your other hand and use this hand to move the rod instead of using the holder to move until you get the feel if this makes sence
oh and make sure you have some good gloves on
when butt welding i grind a shamfer on both sides to make a vee to fill with weld
cheers

Cheers, yes ive watched loads of youtube vids now, so just need some more metal, some rods and a speed glass, but skint at mo

Gave £40 for welder in the end, bargain imo as its a right beast
