Any one seen a dual hand brake unit fitted ? Like one that will brake the left and right rear independently ?

Surely this would be better than an LSD altogether, as the LSD will slip at some point, probably easier the older/ more used it is :

See, I'm thinking LSD's have serious limitations offroad, perhaps leave my axle alone, for instance a winch might be more of an advantage, but a dual hbrake would be cracking off road as u could brake the spinning wheel sending power to the stuck one :)

I think this would be possible with a line lock on each rear brake pipe, you would have to plumb it into the car and have 2 locks one on each side. You could then apply the breaks lock off and release peddle and use clutch and accel accordingly, or just use engine on idle while u left foot break and use clutch etc

This would be cheap ! And very effective if you had a decent spotter giving u commands on which wheel was spinning etc

Just googled found a guy was doing this with remote electronic line locks on each rear brake line, operated from buttons in cab NOW THAT WOULD ROCK

can't find an electric brake lock tho ...

Pfft, I think you're over egging the custard mate :lol Sure for a challenge truck then fiddle brakes could be useful, but if the front spins up on mine (IFS will do it all the time off road in the ruff) then just dab the foot brake. 90% of the brakes is up front anyway so that stops the spinner and gives a second chance for the stuck wheel to grab :D As for the back my LSD does it's work brilliantly, but a quick yank on the handbrake can help from time to time:cool:

Historically I have taken the 'all the gear no idea' approach :D

LSDs are fab for most situations. In fact, my last 4x4 was a Rangie with the viscous centre diff (a different kind of limited slip). It was brilliant. With an LSD at the back, most 4x4s become very difficult to get stuck, as long as at least one of the rear wheels has traction (and you're not beached on something!)

LSD is more than capable as ( in order ) the below can vouch for  :augie

tommo
Terranosaurus
extreme-4x4
makeitfit
Adz
solarman216
Fez_uk
venture
& many more past & present

Just get a axle sorted & you'll be happy :augie

If your going to off road alot the rear hubs are renound for not functioning there for rendering the handbrake useless which would trash your idea

me and makeitfit looked into some brake trickery , but it was a case of money poor time rich . its doable and at the time i had a use for such a thing . but worth the work involved... fun factor YES . explaining to insurance company you made your own brake conversion . errrr NO

Maybe we know something you don't...:eek:

Insurance is great for keeping legal, BUT if you have to claim, they look for ways of not paying out.

A few go faster stripes is seen as a modification, and they have a reason not to allow the claim.

When you start fitting non standard parts that affect stability or stopping distance, they have a field day.

Putting winter tyres on, which are safer in the snow and ice, may in fact increase your premium, even though it lowers the chances of you having an accident.

In addition, they need to be told when the summer tyres are back on.

So this is why we are so obsessed. :thumb2

Why not have two handbrake handles, side by side, one for each wheel that can be locked together for road use, and seperately for off road use.

Quite a simple modification.

Just a thought...:naughty

I'm sorry to say it's become important these days. I hate them and plod and health n safety and political correctness and the nanny state BUT the ruddy insurance companies have got us by the short n curlies:(
I've been stopped loads of times by plod wishing to inspect my mods and then I have to prove to them they're all on the policy too. People and kids have been killed in badly modded trucks both on and off road, so ins and plod take a dim view
I reckon we're (local 4x4 friends) stopped by plod more than the boy racers grrr:confused:

i'm not obsessed just stating the police are clued up on it. Also if you was to have a knock well who knows what would happen.

Up to you what you do.

But I tell mine as it usually costs nothing extra.

Anyone noticed the vast amount of Plod cars about? apparently we are having a period of EU instigated Seat Belt clamp down, NO WARNINGS INSTANT FINE, so be on your guard, Rick

mods like that would be fun on a trailered, err trialer, but not on road car.

was going to say would say illegal anyway, just think if you by mistake
or someone not familiar with the car drove it and got it wrong.

seen fiddles on tiny off road trials for non 4x4s, they look like caterhan 7s
with spotter hanging out lookng at wheels and throwing balance to
aid good wheel.

also driven a tractor with split foot brake, it had a clamp between two
halves to stop its use, moved it to play and yes useful but only extreme
use viable.

sort lsd, or get an air locker.
