ok, nothing major, the car is generally OK But, today we have had some pretty darn heavy rain. On my way home, I have to drive up a pretty steep by pass quite fast, and today, when I hit 50 the car sort of juddered irregularly. NO MIL light, and when I eased off it was ok, and stayed ok at a steady 50mph. Got to the top of the hill and turned off, pulled in, no issues, got home no issues. Went out again tonight, every where by me flooded, went to Ikea about 10 mile away, and on our way back, got a little bit of juddering again, then nothing after that..

what on earth could that be? Seems to be water related. I had a quick look under the bonnet before we went out tonight and tightened the I/C hoses (pretty tight already) and checked the air filter. Bit of grease or moisture round the edges, but dry inside the air box. I did notice a round hole at the bottom of the air box near the edge, not sure if thats correct, or if it should have a rubber bung in it, but could it be possible moisture has got sucked in somehow, and if so, from where?

hope you can help, I really want to go back out and make waves.....

When did you last change the rear diff oil?, and how about grease in the rear prop shaft, look for rust marks on the UJs, Rick

A few months ago I had a similar thing happen. Had to travel about 30 miles in real pouring rain on motorway for most of it. For some reason I got a real cough from engine and then carried on, did this about 4 or 5 times and again no mil. Not done it since but not been out in driving rain like that either.

rear diff oil, I have never done it since I had the car, so its due....rear prop shaft...no idea about grease, will have it checked when I get the clutch done.

yes, sounds similar Jim. This has happened before, but only in pretty much the same conditions - driving rain, high speed under load. Didnt cut out or anything, just a hard cough if you like...???

Yeah I've had exactly the same on a couple of Terranos - only once in the UK but 3-4 times in France where a downpour has to be seen to be believed!

odd...some kind of common issue then. I cant suss it....strikes me as some sort of electrical issue or moisture getting in via the air filter perhaps? Ait Intake goes out via the inner wing....so perhaps a lot of water is being kicked up and inside?

i dunno!

Am I right in thinking then, this is only a problem with the Tdi's ?

Might help to isolate the problem.:nenau

eg moisture on the MAF for example... :nenau

I wouldn't be surprised.......be interesting to see if any TDs have had the phenomenon.....

To be honest, I would rather have the slightly lower performance of the TD, and the very slightly poorer fuel economy than to try to diagnose some of the more difficult issues with the Tdi's

eg MAF's
Crank shaft position sensors.
NATS causing issues that prevent starting.
Misleading fault codes.
Front prop shaft issues as they switched to fixed hubs.

Td's don't have these..........

Give me the 2.7 Td anytime.
Is that why I have driven my Mav for 16 years +....?

Any body else agree ? :nenau

I would still jump in my Mav and drive to John O'Groats and back without thinking.... If some one paid for the fuel.....:lol:lol:lol:lol

i don't have fixed hubs and mines a tdi.

I think some of the later ones were fixed though.

The main point I am making is that I think that the earlier Td's were more reliable, but as legislation regarding emissions tightened in later years, more complex electronics were introduced to reduce these emissions, as a consequence more sensors were used in the feed back process and more complex electronics were required to ensure that these sensors gave back the correct information.

The result: As long as everything was within tolerance, every thing was fine, but upset the status quo, and the system would go into limp home mode, which you then needed a computer to diagnose the problem.
According to some of the threads on this site, many of the fault codes were in fact red herrings, and dealers often replaced non faulty items with new, until the problem was solved.:doh

I would agree 100% with that, I see so many threads on here relating to electronic problems, MAF, code reading etc, very often followed by " the TD doesn't have that" that I consider myself lucky when I bought my TD, knowing nothing about them, that it was not a TDi I ended up with. Some of the issues with the latter would have been a nightmare here in the wilds of Spain, with garages that don't even appear able to adjust a handbrake properly!

I actually agree, I have seriously considered buying a cheap TD to do up and use that instead. I dont mind lower power, and the economy isnt really that much different in real world driving!

sheila may part with her mistral for the right price , but youd have to try hard lol

I'd have to disagree....hauling this POS around even with 125bhp plus a Tunit is painful.....no way can I imagine what 100 bhp would be like...:surrender

I dunno, Peters shifted, it really did. My old Fourtrak was only something liek 89 Bhp TDi, and that shifted pretty good too....mine being SWB probably helps, so IF I ever went to TD form, it would be SWB.

but anyway. back on track....what could cause this sort of engine issue during high load/bad driving rain?? doesnt do it on dry days, only ever on bad rainy days when pushing it, so to me, its electrical?

I can't see it being electrical.....its only a split second when it happens and wet electrics would be longer term......I still favour a bit too much water vapour in the air inlet.
