Does anyone know if it's safe to jack the rear of a terrano up with the centre of the rear diff and then place stands at either side?
It's the older cast diff type.

I have done so multiple times - but with a wide jack, and making sure the front wheels cannot roll. Otherwise I think the car might start rolling forward once you jack it up, and so roll off the jack.

as above, My trolley jack has a 5" round metal cup, with a rubber doughnut thing in the middle, and I lift my car there all the time... I do make sure not to get it onto the drain plug though.

As said, do make sure you chock the front wheels, as it will go for a walk once the rear wheels are off the ground.

Depends what hubs he has, they will have to be engaged for it to work.

Thats the problem I have, Auto's don't "just" engage, and even if you did make sure they are engaged before you start, if the car rolls, they would most likely disengage as they rely on the drive coming from the drive shaft to engage, not the wheels.. Not only that, but normally, if you want to lift the wheels off the ground, there is a good chance you will want to take the wheels off, so then you might remove the handbrake with out thinking...
