Hi, my first real question on here I think. Recent purchase is 3.0l auto Terrano 2, '04 reg and just less than 80k miles. It blows out soot, unburned diesel, on startup and when under pressure putting my foot down or climbing hills. I've had a Volvo V70 D5 '02 manual from new and every month or so give it the Italian tune-up treatment. Partly because I think it works and partly (mainly) because it puts a stupid grin on my face.

Question is how to do this on the Terrano? Never had auto before :nenau

I'm also considering injector and turbo purge/flushes too, but I'm guessing that there's several other threads in that bit of the conversation.

Cheers,

Mick

Mmmm what is the Italian tune up treatment for starters, Rick

Hi Rick, basic Italian tune up in the D5 is to floor it in 4th gear at 40mph on a clear stretch of appropriate motorway and take it up to 65 to 70mph. This moves the turbo actuator and vanes. Repeated a couple of times it can sort out sluggishness and the exhaust emission that I have seen at night in the rear view mirror. I also keep it at high revs in second and third gears for a few minutes a few times a month when possible. Spirited driving seems to keep it happy. The D5 is at its worst when used continuously in slow commuting traffic on short journeys in cold weather.

It's at its best when motorway cruising, recently did a trip with 3 mates and it did 54mpg measured by distance and fuel use from fill ups. Have to say that the car's computer gave the same reading too.

Cheers,

Mick

Never heard of that before :nenau

a good thrash cleans all the soot out of the exhaust:thumb2
i drop mine into 2 and drive it hard for a few miles at high revs every now and then.

That's the idea but how do I achieve it in an auto? Or do you mean auto 2?

Mick

You can hold an auto in 2nd too. Also engage sport mode and let rip. Sport mode should hold it in gear longer before changing. :thumbs

Yep that's the one, or find a very steep hill and put it in sport so it holds the gear.

Thanks guys, we've got some good steep hills here and I've got the idea now. I'll be out tomorrow after my espresso and biscotti doing the latin blacktop laning :thumbs:lol

............... and kudos to you both :bow

Sounds like standard Team Wales driving to me :sly
Never knowingly under full boost :lol

Might get into racing the D5 and T2 up the hills for a laugh. Thing is we have a Golf TDi that is just silly fast for a diesel engine once its wheels are rolling.

So the hierarchy goes truck, cruiser and go-kart.

We also have my daughter's Fiasco, or is that a Fiesta? Can never remember lol. :naughty

I haven't the patience to do the hierarchy list :lol
However I've livened up my T2 considerably. LPG up it's snuff causes an hilarious amount of omph :D

italian tune up is feed mineral break fluid direct to ip an high revs.cleans all.

Gor I miss my S60 D5, what an absolutely brilliant car and ridiculously fast for 'an old mans car'

Too true, and since I've had mine from new I've got a bit older in those 13+ years. I'd be a very happy old man driving it around in another 13+ years.

Once had it cruising at 130mph on an appropriate road on the continent and it was rock solid :thumbs:thumbs

I'm still working on kicking out the soot from the T2 :naughty:naughty

Autos have a disadvantage when it comes to loading the engine fully, I would be hooking up a trailer and once in top with the fluid flywheel clutch locked up, gun it on a suitable road to red line, I guess this would be a motorway type hill, but not being an auto driver am guessing, Rick

bansheeeeeeeeeeeee on our other oil foram its a common fast pump injector clean and yes i have in the early days but good fuel and it shouldn't be needed.
i am still away in van and piggy backed a wi fi.

just realised it is a 3ltr do not put anything in it but pure white road going diesel, or you run the risk of stuffing your pump, Rick

Cheers, wasn't going to stick anything in at this stage.
