I've checked the length and breadth of the car and that's all I can find

Will that need welding up or shall I just do a cover up job with Waxoyl?

yes, he will bum you for a few quid that's for sure. you will probably need to weld it although I cant quite tell where it is, but it looks structural. Just a patch job though to be fair and so long as the welder can get to it easy enough shouldn't be too expensive.
 
Sikaflex or CT-1, a bit o plate and some paint should keep the Mot Bummer from becoming too suss.
Stick the plate on seal round the edges and then plenty of black paint and some waxoyl to make yourself look like a conciensous enthusiast:thumbs

Oh n be sure to use something magnetic, if the tester is old skool he may test it with his magnet to check it's not a body filler n newspaper chasis:eek:
It does happen( to cortina's :nenau )
