Fuel gauge is in the red... WARNING!! LOTS of dumb questions.

BTW - is there a light or audible warning that you are low on fuel?

Right, do I shoot some more diesel in or bite the bullet and use new veg oil??

Q's - 2001 (Y plate) T2 2.7TDi Auto

What is the best way to go to start out on veg oil?

Once you start, do you have to keep on going with veg oil?

Where is the best deal for veg oil, what brand, how much to buy? Container size etc

I assume that I will need a funnel to get it in the tank?

Do you have to run a normal amount of diesel through now and then?

Filters - when/how often do the fuel filter need to be replaced?

Which make of filter is best and where to get it from?

Looking to do the engine oil, air filter, cabin filter as well as the fuel filter... which is the best make and where to get?

Is veg oil OK in the winter?

As it's my first time, I need where to get and filter make/part numbers to get me going. I know it's been covered elsewhere, but the type/amount of engine oil would be a help also :thumbs

I'll have a go at the engine oil, oil, fuel, air and cabin filter myself, but am unsure on the diff/transfer boxes etc. Auto box oil looks clean so I'll just check and see if it needs a top up. What type/brand of auto oil?

So many questions, maybe better if I put it into a garage for them to do

I've just put my first 20lt in got it from a Chinese whole sale £17 been told just put it in and to stop it freezing up in the winter add 5% lead free petrol! I have joined a four am on Facebook called nissan terrano and ford maverick owners uk! great bunch of guys and all willing to help! no going back at half the cost

Most of the guy's on that FB page are members of this club:thumbs As for input on veg oil I can't help as only run derv with a splash of 2 stroke oil:augie

So are you saying it's not a good idea to run veg?

So are you saying it's not a good idea to run veg?

No not at all as many members are using it without any probs & making nice savings over the year:thumb2 for me tho I don't have any room to store ex number of barrels of oil as my shed is full to bursting point with bikes & car parts (got 8 car wheels in there belonging to the Son:doh) & last time I tried veg oil in my old T2 I found a slight drop in performance which I didn't like (others haven't noticed any changes) but I need every bit of power I can at the weekends to try & keep up with the guy's of a club i'm a member of as a lot drive Evo's, scoobies, other hot hatches & even a R33 Skyline ex drift car:lol:lol I also don't do many miles a year so got going to see the big savings some are:augie

as sweety says, there is definitely a loss of power on anything but pure derv, if you can tolerate this plus starting issues then go for it but I have seen and experienced these issues plus there is possible problem with some pump seals not liking other than derv, I will not take the risk, Rick

Ran my last Troll 4.2D on Veg from tesco 2x5L for £10 NOW £9:doh
It was flat as a witches t!t with that or derv so thats all it got and it was greatful for it too..

As I've mentioned before you can used 2500L/year reclaimed oil f nowt. I couldn't be doing with the hassle for the limited mileage that I do mine, that's why I went back to a PeTroll

But if your buying it new and not payin' fuel duty Mr Tax man is not happy.

Macro will keep a record of howmuch you buy , of everything, and this could be used against you if Plod gets the Arse over you having abetter car than him...buy your shoppin at Tesco get cash back and dont put the points on your card. pay for the Oil with cash no trace:thumb2:thumb2

If you can be arsed to find my old threads at one time I put up loads of interesting data about veggie oil and the burn rates and viscosities ect. :thumb2

I run mainly on nest veg, I stick a splash of diesel I'm when I get the chance, and usually about z400/500m of two stroke oil to 40l

Some say this is too much two stoke but mine runs beautifully, besides that on occasion I have used diesel redex with great results, and seems to be varied, people mention the blocking of filters and picking up the muck from the bottom of the tank ect...

When we eventually changed my fuel filter as a fail safe (a lot of time had passed) the technicians at my work were shocked to see how incredibly clean it was!!

Put £20 diesel in and £40 oil.
Scary first time.but you be OK.
I didn't find any noticeable loss in power and it seemed smoother too.
Don't be greedy in winter as it won't start as easy.

2500L per rolling year is for new oil as well as reclaimed. To the excise man, oil, is oil, they don't care where it came from. Clean oil is the simplest and does save a bit, if you start using 20L plastic 'cubies' from the likes of Makro, the containers are VERY weak and so make pouring into the tank via a funnel quite tricky, especially for the first few litres. I find a £10 drill pump from Amazon and a couple of bits of 15mm flexi pipe make filling up easiest and minimises the mess factor.

You do need to keep a record of how many litres you've put in the tank each month to show you haven't gone over the 2500L limit, but don't worry about Makro, etc. recording how much you've bought as you only need to count what gets put into the tank - that is when it has been considered 'converted' into a road fuel.

The power thing is a funny one, technically veg oil has a higher cetane rating than pump diesel, but because it's thicker the pump can't shove quite as much into the engine as it can diesel. Adding anything up to 20% petrol will thin veg oil back down to diesel like viscosity (petrol is MUCH thinner than diesel) but reduces the cetane and therefore still reduces the power even though the pump can deliver the fuel easier. Petrol also helps with timing (veg takes a little longer to burn than diesel per stroke, but petrol likes to go bang so much quicker) the mix brings things back to diesel like running. A cetane enhancer such as 2EHN (might have mixed up the initials on that - bit early) can be added to bring everything back to normal.

Just to add to the confusion, there are lots of different types of veg oil and they are all different. If you buy a couple of the 5L Tesco own brand veg oil bottles, these are actually rape seed oil and this is generally considered the best SVO to use as it is a bit runnier than others. The cheapo stuff from Bookers/Makro is soya bean oil and is much thicker and tends to lead to lumpier cold running and poorer initial starts if your glowplugs are aging. Best thing to try is buy say 20L of Tesco red label (or the sunflower yellow label stuff, almost as good) and a 99p funnel and pour the stuff in. At this time of year 100% veg should be fine, but you'll have plenty of space in the tank to chuck in diesel or whatever if you have any issues.

Filters may clog up initially as veg is also good at cleaning out fuel tanks/lines. Always keep a spare main filter handy and also investigate the mini filter that *MAY* be in the banjo bolt of the pump - seems only some T2's had these little filters fitted and then a % of these have had them removed, but they seriously limit performance if they are there and they get a bit of dirt in them. Fuel lines will also be worth checking, diesel slips through easy, but oil will need a bit more suck, so there is more chance of a tiny hole causing issues and they tend to rot near the rear wheel area anyway - simple to replace - see the downloads.

I think I'll pass on veg, sorry I'm too much of a wuss to faff about putting in a splash of this or that to thin things out and I don't want to create problems, I'm not that tech minded to repair the issues created with using veg. I don't use it that often as it is a business vehicle, but when I do, I want it to start.

Thanks for all your input though :thumb2 :bow

Sorry guys, but I'm out

this is the best advise really. Mine never failed to start but I had to warm the gloplugs twice and wait for the "click" let em get hot to fire the engine, and it was misfiring badly until a bit of warmth went in.

also a little trick that breaks up the gloopy veg inside your system when cold, drive back and fourth and rock the truck with the brakes. this seems to smooth things out, must be dislodging congealing fuel (only applicable when cold)

really.. you have nothing to worry about, I was crapping myself at first thinking "god, what if this, what if that" just do it and youll never go back, guaranteed, even if you only save 1/6th of your fuel bill per year (33% veg 66% diesel) it still adds up to alot of money.

my saving so far this year are huge!! (thus all my silly mods) :sly :clap

give it a go and dont wuss about :kissy

Each to their own, personally I do enough miles that the savings make the risks worth taking, plus it's only a second car for us, so I can manage a day or two without her if needed.

So far, not had any issues in the past few years with veg in the tank, and the % petrol and or diesel I've lobbed in there are truly inaccurate! I often will lob 40 odd litres of veg in and then chuck in some diesel to keep things sweet - never more than £20's worth though!

As I run waste veg oil, it's best to mix petrol with the oil a day or so before adding to the tank as petrol can strip out a few extra impurities, that all the previous filtering efforts have missed. This is also sloshed in at very rough percentages. Pretty much, if it's liquid, the 2.7 lump will have a go running on it!
