Hi!

i have a nissan xtrail 2.2 diesel 2003 model. Over the last couple of years i have had problems with it jerking and then engine cutting off. After changing the fuel filter this solved the problem but after only driving about 6000 miles it happens again so is this normal. Also for the last 2 years or so i have noticed that in 2nd gear the car is very sluggish and pick up is awful. i rev but no pick up and i can hear the rev and then car picks up speed after a while. This happens in 2nd gear and i dont seem to have this problem with other gears. It may be clutch as i have tried with handbrake up and in 1st gear and when i leave cluctch car does not cut off but goes forward. Also i think it is taking more fuel than normal but i dont no if this is to do with fuel price rise or something else. Mentioning it to my mate who said it may be fuel injectors which need cleaning. So i am not sure.
Is this slow pick then causing fuel filter probs or is it the clutch is going. Like i have mentioned it has been around 2 years since it was like this so why has the clucth not gone by now as i use to tow a trailer too. I have topped up with fuel and will see how much fuel it is taking. Please if anyone can help it will be much appreciated.

cheers

i think there is a test you can do for the clutch to see if its going , im sure someone will advise exactly what it is , but i think its putting car in 5th gear with revs and handbrake on , then trying to set off with handbrake stil on , but im not sure , someone will be along shortly:thumb2

thanks for that, yes its in 3rd gear and you try to set off. I have done that and it drives which i am thinking is clutch but am surprised that it has been a few years and why not any probs in 4th gear and if so is this causing it to take more fuel

Simple clutch test, 5th gear, handbrake on hard, rev engine, drop clutch keeping foot on the throttle, if engine stalls then the clutch is OK if it only slows then the clutch is almost gone, if the engine slows fairly quickly and stalls say about 4 to 5 seconds, then clutch will last a little while yet with care, do not repeat this test till it has cooled right down and do not carry the test for more than about 6 or 7 seconds, Rick

Hello there. Without seeing the car it is tricky to give a definate answer, however unless the engine is revving high when in gear then it doesnt sound like the clutch is slipping.

Is this the Di, or the dCI ?

MAF's can fail on these giving low power, as can the intercooler split through bad design (you'll hear wooshing)

If it's the dCI, then these are *very* well known to have problems with the pump suction valves, which will give poor performance at low revs, and also cause stalling and poor running in general. It doesnt always bring the management light on. Sadly the fix is neither easy nor cheap, so you need to have checked all other causes before having the valves changed.

Common rail injectors either work, or dont (causing a non-start) and with the fuel rail at upto 1800bar, don't mess- injected fuel into the skin which you wont see will kill you.

eng problem

yes had the same prob on my x trail dci was air entrainment in fuel pump went to my indipendent jap garage cost me 50quid , then found fuel non return valve faulty, had that done 800quid all set up 1yrs gaurantee no prob since, hope this is of help, i could not do this job myself due to the equipment and soft ware involved.egg problem
