Decided it was time to make a snorkel for the Trol. I just don't like any of these massahoosive external ones that go ALL the way down the wing  plus they're stupidly expensive:confused:
So how hard can it be :lol
Bought some 3" silicone hose off fleabay in sexy black :sly £38:clap
Then set about cutting up the air filter housing as follows:

This will be the new way in :thumbs
20121006_140141.jpg

So next job, drill a dirty great 85mm hole in the bulkhead  where these holes are
20121006_144458.jpg

Here you go, and then file off the edges nice n smooth
20121006_152137.jpg

To make a nice collar through the bulkhead I found this in me garage :thumbs It's a 4" soil pipe adaptor for a 1 1/2" waste pipe, ideal :clap
20121006_152215.jpg

Here it is in place ready to drill the b/h so I can bond it in place
20121006_152731.jpg

I drilled a big hole in this too so the air intake will fit through it a bit like this
20121006_152746.jpg

So as that worked well I bonded it in place with Tiger seal and a few screws to hold it in place till the goo cured
20121006_154653.jpg

Next the air filter box needs some modifications :naughty Basically cut off the bend bit and then cut off the square end, as that bit will be in a new position on the box.
20121006_160634.jpg

Then I grafted on the square bit onto the box and riveted it in place , again using tiger seal to seal it all up.
20121006_164209.jpg

Then I cut a bit of old tread plate to blank off the old intake hole. Again, rivets and tiger seal do the business
20121006_172708.jpg

Refit the filter box back on the Trol
20121006_174803.jpg

Here you go , plastic pipe back in place and it lines up a bloody treat :clap

Next stage will be the silicone hose connection and then routing it through the dash and up the A post.
Watch this space for the next instalment :naughty

looks good was going to do the same on my off roader but thought the intake noise would be a negative factor, I can still hear it with the snorkel out side, so wait your results, Rick

I did it on my T2 and quite enjoy the noise :D it's not a prob on the T2
However it may be a little more powerful in the Trol with 4.2 litres to keep alive :naughty

Yeh, I can just imagine UR hair getting sucked towards the dash every time you boot it :D

You could arrange a quick connect and a blank cover under the bonnet, so for risky trips, connect to the inside, and for motorway driving at 70 mph, put the blanking cover on, and use the normal intake location.

Simples..

What would the MOT say regarding the inside air intake?:nenau

Exactly what I had on the T2 , snorkel for offroading and then ram air bonnet scoop for road work simples.:D
No probs for mot:cool:

erm, thanks for your concern :lol but the intake will be on the roof and not IN the cab :D

Looking good, That tigerseal sticks well don't it!

It's bloody awesome :D It's similar to the stuff they use to stick windscreens in and that's structural :sly just a slower cure time :)
Not cheap though

that's a great idea, i might steal that if i decide to make a snorkel :augie:D:thumb2

Part 2

Right then , did a bit more today and got the inside sorted pretty much. Took out the glove box and the grab handle in readiness for hole cutting :sly
20121007_131421.jpg

With the air vent out and working from under the dash, there's just enough room for an 80mm hole :thumbs It does get close to the grab handle but not too much.
20121007_133741.jpg

Again much filing and smoothing required so you don't damage you pipe :lol Then gently insert your pipe into the hole  a little wriggle and twist a bit , then ahhh it's in :naughty
20121007_134431.jpg

Pull it through slowly so it can be passed above all the heater blower gubbins and then carefully out the B/H collar . Then you get this the other side .
20121007_134935.jpg

Back in the glove box zone I got a suitable zip tie to hold the ducting up out the way of the heater controls and keep a nice gentle curve.
20121007_144902.jpg

Then the glove box innards need to be trimmed a bit to allow for the ducting, didn't loose too much of it, still room for man things
20121007_152442.jpg

The ducting is now up the A post and zip tied to the roof till I can get to the scrap yard and liberate a bonnet scoop. Got the exposure all wrong but you get the drift.:augie
20121007_160339.jpg

Opened the back window and took it for a test drive :lol:lol
As Stinka said, hold on to your hat :lol:lol
Sounds sweet :naughty

when can I take a spin in it, I got the insurance :naughty

I suspect there may be some turbulence in that flexpipe, could restrict flow a bit. Suggest a test, use a gas fitters ugauage to see the difference each end at full throttle

There may be some for sure but then it's bigger than the stock intake. So I'm hoping it wont be an issue. It's a silicone pipe and pretty smooth inside really and I've kept the bends nice n gentle, unlike the ruddy Nissan intake. it was like a bloody rabbit warren :lol
I've got a ugauge but not exactly sure how I'd apply it in this case. How would you suggest? It'll be interesting to see the results :thumbs

Add a nipple to the air filter box, take a reading then take the snorkle pipe off take another reading.
Hopefully not a lot of difference but I suspect a bit at least, I am interested in the results.
