So...

Occasionally, (three times), I get in the truck, turn the ignition on and the dash stays light-less, the windows are inoperable as are the wipers...

...but the truck will start and run.

The first time it happened I was part way down the road when I realised there was nothing happening on the dash (no dials either, or indicators) and then it suddenly sprang back to life shortly after.

Has since happened twice more. I haven't torn the dash apart yet as (electrician by trade) I know how hard it is looking for an intermittent fault.

Answers on a postcard to the usual address.

My first thoughts are the ignition switch but odd how some stuff works and others don't unless the switch contains more than one switch if you know what I mean.

I would go with the ignition relay first, as that would also be the easiest to check, as you can pull it, and see if you get the same symptoms.

I think it is in the fuse box under the bonnet.

Just done a bit of RTFM'ing, it says the relay is on the back of the fuse box under the drivers side of the dash... Manual page EL245

ignition switch gets caught between positions, or just after 2.

had my self engine running but no functions like radio or wipers.

Mine wouldn't shut off the engine.i could remove the key and it would keep running.

Cheers chaps.

I'll have a look tomorrow at the relay and see if I can replicate the symptoms.

I hadn't thought about the ignition barrel, really hope it's not that. I was thinking it may be a loose main connection on the wiring harness, hadn't even thought about the ignition.

:doh

Hope it's nothing too drastic.

Switch is a separate unit to the barrel, single screw and the switch drops off the bottom of the barrel :thumbs

Another vote here for the ignition switch or relay, more likely switch!!!

Seen it on a few older ones pre intecooler, had it with my 96' Maverick and seen it on a couple of 2003 Terrano's too
