Hello all, I'm new here and am interested in a basic Terrano 2 to use as a daily runaround as well as for off-roading / overlanding.

I have a Land Rover Discovery 2 project at the moment but would like something else that I can drive when I'm half way through an upgrade / job on the Land Rover and wouldn't be so precious about damaging.

My first question is: Does anyone know the exact differences between 'S' and 'SE' models? As far as I can tell, my ideal one would be a base-model 2.7 diesel SWB with non-body coloured bumpers and on steel wheels.

Welcome aboard, cant go wrong with a Terrano especially when you've seen what they can do.
No idea on the specs and to be fair about I wouldn't let it worry me. Just look for a solid one and you'll be fine. Plenty people done loads of mods on here so no shortage of info.

my 98 se has tinted windows all round,no sunroof,no built in cd changer or roof rails and no sunroof.my 99 se has all of it but with smoked glass all around except windscreen and front 2 windows.there might be other but thats all i can think off.both are tdi.

Thanks everyone.

Banshee & AlexD333; I've already had a read through your threads and have a few ideas of my own. :D

Am I correct in thinking that Terrano 2s have open diffs front and rear, plus a centre diff lock?

Plenty of modding to do on a Terrano, you might end up selling the LR instead :naughty

:lol I don't think so somehow; here's the D2:

You get the idea ...

So Alex, when did you get the air compressor, and spray gun?

Very neat application of sprayed mud there.

:lol:lol

Open front diff and lsd rear with centre lock

Thank-you. After a quick read, it seems these are selectable 4x4 like some pickups? A completely different system to the Discovery but it'd be nice to have some contrast. I think my biggest problem will be finding the right one!

That's right bud :thumb2 and because there's no centre diff you shouldn't engage 4wd unless you're on a surface where the wheels can slip as otherwise you'll cause transmission wind up

Understood. :) I didn't realise these also had a LSD in the rear axle. Good to know!

I sold my last Terrano SWB for a disco2 V8 biggest mistake i've ever made the T2 out performed the disco off road ok the big V8 sounded fantastic but only kept it for 18 months as got sick of doing repairs every weekend so started hunting for another T2 & the only repair i've done in the past 2 years is change the thermostat:lol:thumb2 need to change 1 brake pipe soon but that's it:augie

Love the terranos very reliable if looked after. Can be modified quite easily. And will put a smile on your face every time you drive it

Quite different alright!

Work all the time and don't cost a fortune in repairs!

One thing about the D2: Mine came with the factory centre diff lock but most don't. Retrofitting it means the limiting factor off road, providing you've got a decent driver & tyres, is often how much body damage you can tolerate (it has a large rear overhang like a LWB T2). - I've fitted rock sliders and will fit HD bumpers to mine before I do anything too extreme with it. :thumbs

Whilst we're on the subject, I've noticed that the rear numberplate on the T2 / Maverick looks like it'd be an early casualty off-road. I've seen one with a plate holder (including light) on the tailgate so would probably copy that. How sturdy are the rear bumpers?

Are you still looking for a terrano

Hello, to be honest it's a bit soon for me. - I joined-up here early so that I could do some research before hopefully buying in the autumn (I've got a few trips away planned, should be back mid-October). Yours sounds well looked-after though; got any photos?
