I have a 2.7td maverick 1994 (no intercooler model)

can I just buy an intercooler and fit it like the later intercooled models?????

any pics or info would be great

many thanks in advance

sorry to be blunt but no. don't know reason why but u cant I think so anyway

It's not a straight swap. I think Ryan has some pictures somewhere, as he was going to try to do it.

Things like
Inlet mainifold is different (missing mountings)
The rocker cover oil filler is stepped to bring it further forward.
I think the output of the Turbo is also at a different angle.

ok I didn't think so but was worth asking haha

thank you for your replies :thumb2

It is not just a case of sticking an inter cooler on, there has to be some means of telling the fuel pump that more/denser air is going in and the TD does not have that facility, Rick

thanks mate, well that's that then I wont be doing that haha :thumb2

pft you're all gay :lol
It's perfectly do-able either top mount or front mount.
I went top just to keep it out the mud.
As said above you will need to make some I/C mounts, easy enough. Inlet mani is either a TIG welding mod or get a TDi one from the scrappy.
You'll need a bonnet too or do as I did and stick a scooby one on. Just angle grinder stuff really. Some silicone bends and clips etc.

See here for some ideas http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15134&highlight=bigger+intercooler
Bare in mind you'll probably get around 10-15 bhp with a bit of a tweak of the pump too. So if you can do it yourself there's some horses at the end of it for you :naughty

Can't you just turn the fuel up ?

possibly, but that would be a fixed thing, and the intercooler will be variable depending on outside air temperature, road speed, and engine load, just turning the pump up would probably produce smoke when the intercooler was not working at low road speed for instance, Rick

will have a look at link now,

pump or something was turned up by previous owner as very quick for what it is (not 100%)

will look into it more I think

like said please bear with me as I am new to mechanical side of it

Rick it's commonly done on turbo'd patrols and pre ECU ones at that.Basic I know but essentially the motor will be over fuelling a bit pre boost . Then again I like a bit of black smoke, I can see where I've been then :lol

You are most likely correct, my diesel knowledge is more truck related 12 ltr NA and 7 ltr turbos some twin jobbies a little intercooler and a little pump tweek will not be I guess too bad, probably getting too critical in my old age, Rick

Shall we call you Victor Meldrew :lol
I know a half turn on the trol N/A engine just brings it up to where it should be in the 1st place. Nissan kept the pumps below par for emmissions and mpg reasons when fighting against more modern engine fuel return figures.

Aye, I've still got a intercooler as the ferret guy said, I was gonna fit one, but then was stopped:doh, you need another turbo and inlet manifold, but as they say, the fueling needs tweaked for any real difference

what's the process on tweeking the fuelling as I said the previous owner said he had done it and she does shift and does have a bit of a drink problem witch makes me think he has already tweeked it?????

Pete we are learning all the time, my work T2 has been giving me shit MPG for months now like 17 to 18 after reading some stuff on the net I fitted a resistor in place of the inlet air temp sensor to kid the ECU that the air was cold, solo I am getting 28 and towing 22 looked at the plugs and nice light brown, before white, so increasing the fuel has made it more fuel efficient, do not give a whatsit about emissions when it hits my pocket, Rick
