Had oil consumption issues (again) and suspected the turbo seals, but there is minimal play and the oil appears to be being sucked in from the pipe that joins to the top of the rocker cover. The front left hand corner off the intercooler is oily and it appears to be being blown back by the fan along the bottom edge.

I am assuming the intercooler is leaking, but that doesn't explain the oil consumption, or does it? the car isn't smoking particularly. Otherwise seems running very well (apart from the clutch) though there is a distinct whistle (like sucking air through your teeth, when you rev it, again I assume this could be a crack in the intercooler?

sensible ideas please :thumb2

First off turbo's do not have seals as such, they run in plane bearings with oil flinger's, if the oil is coming from the rocker cover then the pistons are passing oil, if also the intercooler is leaking oil then the intercooler is leaking/split, sounds like you have multiple problems, you should have got me to look at it while you were here, Rick

now you tell me :doh

Anyway, the intercooler is going to be pressure tested in the morning, I will let you know how that goes. I may have to come back down your way ... as if i needed an excuse :augie

pop some pics on ... of the truck though ay :naughty

It's mostly back together now, after cleaning pipes etc, only the intercooler is under my caravan waiting for testing in the morning. But I will if that doesn't prove to be the issue :thumb2

is the dipstick normal, ie not blowing up a little .

how is your rocker cover gasket ?

is there more pressure than normal from the oil fill hole ?

have you tried disconnecting the breather to oil catch tank that goes into your air intake

what is your air filter like ? is it blocked in any way ? including the ducting ?

try straight oil, sae30, i changed to this and now have no blowby oil and no oil consumption between services, before, lots of both.

I haven't noticed the dip stick blown up a little, what would that indicate?

the issue does seem to be around the oil breather pipe from the rocker cover to the catch tank, If i disconnect this does it need blocking at both the catch tank and end that comes from the rocker cover?

I have cleaned all the pipes and the filter seems fine :nenau

intercooler was found to be leaking and fixed, at a mates favour rate by an old school friend who has a business doing these sort of repairs. I will put it back later and have another try.

Ordering new clutch in the morning :thumb2

Intercooler is leaking again - my mate said it was pretty rough when he fixed it. Tried a second hand one today, leaking in the same place - front left hand corner.

The symptoms are excessive oil consumption, and excess oil around and in the intercooler, plus a louder than usual whistle from the turbo.

Apparently it is quite common on these and very common on X-Trails, so if you have an oily cooler have it pressure tested :thumb2

when mine worked again (briefly) my fuel economy picked up and so did the performance.

Now hang on, why on earth would a leaking i/c cause oil consumption? Surely it just causes air leakage and overfuelling cos theres more fuel than there should be (as a result of less air getting through....)?

EDIT: going down the river with a cup of char, back shortly.......buck your ideas up and sort this thread out will you? LMAO!

I'm not sure why but - if you take the pipe off the turbo you will find the oil is being sucked from the crank case breather, if it's oily closer to the turbo then it's probably your turbo's fault. Apparently - according to those who know - excess oil in the intercooler is either a dodgy turbo or a cracked cooler. So if you have an oil patch on yours get it tested. The two i have found leaking have had oil in the front left hand corner the fan then blows it back along the bottom edge.

Hmmm not sure I follow that logic TBH, sounds like two problems at once....like I said, if you think about it its like saying I've got a leaky inlet manifold thats making me use more oil? Noooo -its making my engine run too rich.:nenau
