I cannot find the answer to this...…

I currently have 235/65/17 tyres going bald

will 255/65/17 tyres fit on my wheels instead??? loads of these for sale near me locally at really good prices.

Im not modifying wheel arches or doing suspension lifts.

Have a look on here https://tiresize.com/tyre-size-calculator/ the first thing to look at whether the diameter will fit in the arch aperture, then look at the width and hazard a guess whether they'll catch anything.
Someone who's fitted larger will be along with experience.

I've got a set of 4 Cooper Discoverer AT/3 235/65/17 that I'd be happy to part with for the correct money.

Cheers.
Only thing is I'm in Scotland. Postage of your tyres would be a lot

In my experience it depends on the rim width you have, if you exceed the manufacturers normal width then you can end up with a lot of sidewall give & the danger of the rim seal being lost during extreme cornering.

I made this mistake a few years ago on a Vauxhall Astra I went oversize and the sidewall give made the steering that was rack & pinion just awful (really floaty) though the ride was more comfortable.

If you ring a reliable tyre retailer they will tell you the maximum width for a given rim width & wheel diameter.

My 8JJ x 18" rims were fitted with 225/40 R18 tyres but I can go as wide as 245/40 x18" but the recommended is 235/40 x 18".

I think you might just get away with it.
A 255 /65/17 is about 10" wide with 65% of that which is the tyre wall height at 6.5".

The standard size is 9.2"wide with a side wall height of 5.9".
So 1" wider and 1.5" on the diameter.
