Guys , I'm just back from a quick trip to Iceland, and no not the shopping one :lol
It was my secret presy to the wife for her 60th
It's been a bucket list thing for years but always put it off as thought it too expensive.
In light of recent friends passing both here and at home, I thought sod it, we're going.
I got cheap flights £130 for the two of us, a cheap hire car £80 for 5 days, ragged it silly on dirt track roads like a rally pro :lol
Air BnB accom with hot tub £200
Saw the Northen lights briefly one night.
Geiser going off 4 times in a row, un heard of.
Went down a volcano and swam about in hot springs.
Saw no end of monster trucks and drank Viking beer :naughty
The place is just bonkers and a total assault on all the senses non stop.
Petrol is not much more than here, food isn't that mad if you shop in the supermarket.

If any of you have it on your bucket list, don't piss about, just get on it .
We're going again for sure
Now then , where's my spanners :sly

Brilliant your trip sounds great but you know what zippy is going to say don’t you?

Whole heartedly agree with your advice about bucket list, you just never know what’s around the corner buddy.

Yeah I know, but the trouble with forum life is all that uploading pics to a site someplace.
Then find the buggers again and link up etc:doh
I'll get them up soon

Wondered where you had been, Jim is right you do not know what is round the corner, he has had a wakening call so yes to all you guys sort in now before it may be too late, I am 71 and doing all I can to live life to the full, Rick

Okay, okay, I'm trying my best...... But you're all so right, after losing Mum back along..... I sort of woke up to it, retired again and trying hard..... 🤔

Was that £200 Airbnb for the whole 5 days? If so that's an amazing deal.

Icelands on the list. would love to go! One day :)

You wouldn't cough up the taxi fare to the airport you tight Welsh git!!!!! :lol

No need for taxi. Hire car people picked us up and dropped us off again.
Ordinary transfers from airport to Reykjavik and back about the same as hire car, go figure :D

Just a few pics as suggested.
The sun is not up for long this time of year. That shadow pic was about 11am :lol
I calculate this Cruiser to be for sale at £189,000

Rally hire car on spikes :naughty

Sunrise

About 11 am I think it was

Geothermic supply station :D
99% of the country is heated this way

Water just oozes out of the ground , all filtered and lovely

Another hot tub refresher

Don't usually do church stuff, but this is modern design like it should be :thumb2

Glacial river over some massive falls.

Probably my fav, a late night dip in the geothermal pool "Secret Lagoon" was just sureal. Heated by geisers at the edge. Every now and then they bubble up and top up the pool some more. AND it's hot :clap

Going to sell some body parts and return quick sharp :D

Looks like a fantastic trip Pete, maybe Mags and I should consider it, Rick

Your pictures have got me thinking Pete....Mmm:naughty
Maybe a surprise trip for my Wife in her 50th Planetary year.

Iceland Trip Brilliant cant wait for Pics.

The trip sounds brilliant mate, I looked at it about 5 years ago, decided it was too expensive-it was a package deal we looked at. Guy I used to work with had a daughter who lived out there and he sold the idea to me. Sadly at the age of 70 I could not do the trip now for a myriad of reasons.

Until a couple of weeks ago my wife was visiting her Father daily, caring for him as she has done since her Mother died in January 2017. Suddenly there is a huge gap in her life, I sense a New Bucket list is in the making once we are through the initial mourning phase.

Basically, don't be put off by the perceived "expensiveness". It is more expensive but not bonkers. I can assure you all we were on a mega budget and as shown above you can do it economically. Package deals are defo a no no as far as I could see.
My only mistake was assuming a 40 mile trip would take 40mins :lol
Dirt roads and low speed limits changed all that but the views at all times are worth it

Just re-reading your thread as looking to book a trip in Feb as its my wife's 40th. Going to take the 3 younger Kids so got to go at half term holiday mega peak Time. Looking at 5 nights and hire car. We will be taking our own teabags and dried food.
Got any not to be missed places?
We looking at the Golden Circle.

Sod that, take the kids out of school. Go when you want, not the state , grrrr.
Dont get bogged down doing tourist trap stuff in buses etc, just pick your POI and drive . Northern lights you can see if they're there, no need to pay a fortune to do that, just find a dark hill, there's plenty of them lol
We particularly liked the Secret Lagoon, much nicer than the blue one.
Gulfoss waterfalls are massive and then ofcourse the great giesers.
There's a tour up the glacier in monster 6x4 trucks and glacier caves etc We ran out of time and money this trip but will defo do that next time :)
I'll look up the hire car deal if you want as they picked us up from the airport and delivered back in the deal :)

Best price I could find and the guys there were really helpfull.
Free pick up from the airport and return ofcourse :thumbs
If you havent booked stuff yet, sign up to Quidco and get cash back on your purchases :naughty

I will have a look at the car rental as I haven't booked that yet. My 2 older son's are coming now as well so will need a 7 seat .
Booked the Flights yesterday and the accommodation the night before.
It's not a surprise birthday trip for my wife because I had to let her find the accommodation ( you know what they're like) but she's made up all the boys are coming.
Thanks for your help on things.:bow
