How to choose what type of tyre to fit

I'm new to all this 4x4 stuff, and am looking for a little advice on how to choose what type of tyre to use.

My SWB Maverick is currently fitted with Maxxis MA751 235/75R15 tyres all round. These are marked 'M&S'.

But is an M&S tyre the right type for me? It's for nearly all road use, with lots of dual carriageways, roundabouts, motorways and urban streets. Low road noise is an important issue. Offroad use won't be particularly extreme, if I'm honest - probably little more than muddy fields, sandy beaches and mild green lanes. And I tow a 1500kg single axle caravan.

Do I particularly need anything labelled 'M&S' or 'A/T'? Are the more 'road orientated' 4x4 tyres going to be suitable for my modest off road pursuits?

Any being a fussy bugger, I tend not to buy the cheaper tyres, preferring to stick to the premium brands. And I like my tyres to look nice too. And I like the raised white lettering I have at the moment :roll:

I don't need tyres just yet - just planning ahead - but would these examples be suitable for my need?

If your using mainly roads go for a mainly road use tyre, it will save a little fuel and noise, check the gallery pick called 'plank in the mud' I was using bald road pattern tyres that day!

I use bridgestone dueller HT tyres on a 4x4 and drive some green lanes and muddy fields every day with no issues and they are basically a road pattern tyre.

Think as standard they came with Dueller HT's, I have to say mine seemed to wear quickly though.

From what you've said a norm AT tread might be a bit chunky for you :? so I would go for something that looks more like a normal car tyre if your going to spend 90% of your time on tarmac :smile: I found the Bridgestone Duellers dreadfull on wet roads & even braking :roll:I won't ever have another set even if they were free :roll: this is just my view of them :wink:

i have had bridgestone duelers and cooper ht on previous motors and the bridgestones where my pick of the two.used to aqua plane in the wet with the coopers on my old shogun.i think the brigestones seem to wear on the front as they are quite a square edge tyre and the corners always wear the tyre edge down.

having said that the duallers we have seem to be better off road than on, they were lousy in the ice the other day!

Mine were Dueler HT's I think & yes I found that the T2 would under & over steer badly in the wet so binned them with 6mm of tread left on them :roll: Had my Falkens fitted & tried them out on the same bit of road with no probs even when going faster they gripped :smile: I do drive quiet hard but but I was surprized at how little the dueller gripped & I almost got stuck on wet grass with the thinks fitted 8O

funny because we drive off raod in mud and grass and on bridal paths every day with duellers no problems, but i have noticed the wet road braking when towing is poor and on ice they aren't as good.

I wouldn't recomend buying them, I'm just telling about my experience of them! if i were buying a new set i would try something else. I really love BFG's but i think they are too exspensive and have a limited choice of sizes

TBH I like the Falkens & they do a more road bias tyre than the AT's i've got & they were'nt that costly at £62 a corner (fitted) I've calmed down alot since getting the T2 (used to have hot hatches) but have found these tyres give me good feed back ie in the wet you can feel feel before they will break away on a wet round about & in the dry they'll scream like mad before any grip is lost (only managed that twice)

On a final note, you know i said our duellers were not so hot in certain circumstances on the road?

well i found their limitations off road today, I tried to tow a transit van off a muddy field and had all 4 wheels spinning

I know some heavier treaded but still road biased tyres were on the cards sooner or later but now it looks like sooner rather than later, let me know how you get on with the ones you choose! :wink:
