Whilst not a vehicle as such, I hope that the mods allow this thread to stay.

Has anybody got any experience with building their own trailer?

I know that it needs an IVA inspection before being allowed on the road. There is quite a lot of information regarding the IVA on the government website but I am just wondering if I am missing something. :nenau

The plan (if possible) is to build a 10x6ft tipping trailer. The cost savings of doing it myself compared to buying it brand new is between £1500-£2000, a worthwhile saving.

The welding will be scrutinised by my brother in law who is a certified welder.

It's a bit of a grey area really.
Trailers built after 2012 are supposed to have the IVA test but in all reailty there are hundreds of home made ones on the roads that have never been tested and no way to prove they where built after that date.
Suppose insurance could be an issue for an unplated trailer.
Just make sure everything you use for the build is CE approved and follow the lighting regulations and you will be fine.
Another way round getting one tested is to just modify an existing one.
I looked into all this when i had the hair brained idea of building one out of the rear of the terrano. :lol

Banshee, thanks but no thanks. On this occasion I will not be making an offer. If I decide to built a trailer than I would like to start from the ground up.

Elty, I have no issues with the trailer needing an IVA test. At least it will then be legal on the road and it can’t bite me in the ar*e later. The cost of an IVA is only £100 maximum.

All parts will come CE marked as I don’t want to cut corners and it needs to be safe.
