Not a great start to the morning!
Went to reverse off the drive this morning & felt a big clonk. Went to pull away and the only way I can describe it is the wheels locked up, so I pulled over to try and have a look & the hand break was really stiff. Had a look underneath but didn't have a clue what I was looking at lol. Carried on driving (slowly) pressed the break again & locked up again. I had to be towed to a garage in the end on a low loader. I went through some BIG puddles yesterday! Related??? Any help/ideas would be appreciated. Many thanks Chris.

no idea!! anything lodged in the caliper/front disc? Then again, you said H/B was stiff, so could be the shoes have disintegrated!

it is not unknown for bonded linings to come off, the free lining them tries to get on top of the other one, result if it happens at very low speed = lock up, if it happens on the road then severe overheat of the drum, Rick

It did smell a bit hot at one point.

does sound like your shoes then, and with luck thats all you'll need to have done :thumbs

Just from the stuff I used to see at work all the time (im no mechanic)

I bet this is an easy fix!! If its handbrake related should be no more than 30 mins per wheel for shoes I'd say?

Someone may correct me but that was rule of thumb at honda 0.5 lab per wheel.

for a good mechanic who knows what he is doing I'd agree. Its not a big job so long as there isn't any other damage.

Is the handbrake coming up further than normal?

The reason I ask, the handbrake outer, where it goes into the back plate of the rear wheel can corrode, then collapse onto the inner cable, thus trapping it.

Compare each side, see if there is a difference in the last couple of inches at each wheel.

My first thought is as Rick (Solarman) suggested re the brake lining breaking away from the shoe.

I wonder if we can determine if it is a particular make of shoe, that separates from the lining.
Has anybody found this?

Edit... In years gone by, you could re line brake shoes, each had about 8 copper rivets, drill out the rivets, avoid breathing the asbestos dust, and I remember using a drift in the vice to contact the outside of the rivet, and using a countersink drill bit to fix the rivet. So simple then, cheaper too.

sounds very simular to when one of my handbrake cables snapped.
the o/s rear wheel locked up solid.
had to strip it down and disconnect the cable so i could drive home.
it knackered up the shoes and snapped the pins which hold them in place.

When it locks up the hand brake goes really tight/ will only pull up 1 or 2 clicks.

It sounds like lock up, and something must be getting in between the linings and the drum. If there is no squealing ie metal to metal contact, then the only answer, is a loose lining, as suggested.

If this was the case, then the handbrake cable would be tight as you have found.
You can also have a look at the brake compensator, which is under the vehicle where the handbrake cable goes in, and from the compensator to the two hand brake cables. You might see it off set to one side. The one that appears to be the shorter cable, ( ie compensator closest to that wheel) might be the wheel/drum that is problematic.

We await to hear of the solution.:bow

Had a call from the garage. The lining has come the shoes & the cylinders are leaking!! More money! :-(
