Hi all.

I just removed and tried to clean the front freewheel hubs as described in download 16. However, I couldn't get the main locker assembly out. I did remove a ring and a spring which sat behind the lip on the inner side of the locker assembly, but that's it.

Also, the ring and spring on one side went on nice and easy, whereas the other side seemed not to fi very well. Not sure if this is significant.

Eventually, after sort of cleaning and re-greasing the parts I could get at, I re-assembled the hub and put it back on. But to no avail. I still have no 4wd.

Can anyone help me out?

Cheers

Neil

ah you took it completely apart lol

i did that and found that the spring was too weak you will find you need a new spring as it or one of the brake rings is not breaking

have you found which one isnt locking ?

if not rotate the drive shaft not the prop untill one enguages do other side the same way

should be very little grease in their too much and the brake rings wont cause the hub to engage :thumbs

Whoaa there Karl!!!! "Rotate the drive shaft not the prop."

Now would that be the sticky-out bit with teeth? And how do I know which one isn't locking? And does the brake ring sit on top of the spring?

You may be realising that I know what I'm looking at, without necessarily knowing what it's called!!!

The brake ring that comes off with the hub. Check the inner lip and you'll see it's got lugs that are tapered on each side of the lug. These lugs are the things that brake, sometimes just one of the tpered edges break. Remember which one is which and compare them side by side.

drive shaft comes out the diff and has the cv boots on its ends

it is the bit thats sticks out with teeth on it when you take the hub off

when you turn this you will hear a click and you wont be able to turn it any more thats if the hub is working, if you turn it and it clicks/doesn't click then that's the one that is in need of repair or replacement :thumbs

Right lads. Can't get to it now - three kids to sort out!! Will try again tomorrow night.

One thing though. I bunged a load of "copper ease" grease in there, made it proper gloopy, cos it was greased when I stripped it. Even with this, one brake ring seemed springy, the other was too tight and difficult to get under the lip. Once in, it wouldn't move much at all. Is this the one that will need replacing?

And Karl, if I try turning the drive shaft, do I need the relevant hub on to test it, and should all this be done with the gear lever in 4H?

If I remember right that's what happened to mine. got real tight because one of the lugs was bent and on the point of cracking. Give that one a good dose of looking at.

yes hubs need to be on correctly

no need to change into 4wd

It's not the hub. It's the Brake Ring or Snap ring as some dealers know it as. Someone posted a diagram in last few days and it's item 25 if I remember right. The brake rings come as a matched pair. Check yours first before you go out spending money though.

Jim

I'm sure it must be the brake ring then, cos it just didn't fit right. If I can fit new 'uns and it works, I'll be one happy chap.

Incidentally, if one is faulty, does this stop 4wd working altogether?

yep if one is broke then the drive goes to it and the other wont engage thats why you check both

You'll need to fit the brake rings as a set.

I would have thought the "strong" spring is the one that works properly and the weak one is knackered.

Cheers Karl.

Will be looking for a pair of them tomorrow. Where is this diagram - item 25? In the download section or something?

saves mucking about see if cncfabs or redrex or adz has one

Don't ask me the tech bit and how but when my NS Brake Ring broke the 4wd did not work full stop. It did not become 3WD. I'm sure someone will be along to shout me down but that is what happened to me and I was in a place that I could play and test to my hearts content.

you are correct the drive would have gone to the broken hub

A diff always gives more torque to the side that is spinning faster, which is why they're a bit crap really, at least for off road use.

anyone make a diff lock or lsd for the front axle on a t 2 ?
