HELP! 'tis not very often I ask technical advice but here goes.

When my old banger (T2 2004 bosh electrics) is standing, out of gear or in gear with foot on clutch) it is very lumpy to rev and blows clouds of bluish smoke. When driving the smoke appears to have gone, it is not hard to start and is running on 100% diesel and has been for months :nenau

Help please, Thanks :thumb2

The engine is burning engine oil

Worn cylinders or piston rings
Faulty valves or valve stem seals
Engine over full with engine oil
Faulty injector pump/lift pump allowing engine oil to be mixed with the diesel

yup .....blue smoke is engine oil ....... when you rev it more diesel is going into the mixture so you may not see the blue smoke .

Ignoring the colour of the smoke, lumpy running, difficult to start, but not an issue with yours, and settling down when warm is normally a sign that one or two glow plugs have gone.
Easy to check, see downloads.

What grade oil do you have? if 5w/ something, then too thin.
Also make sure it's not overfilled.

Blue smoke as suggested, usually indicates oil, so could be turbo, or oil collecting where it shouldn't going into the cylinder on start up.
Worth a look at the pipes on the turbo, and in intercooler.

Not normally piston rings on these, but do you notice any oil loss between changes?

Good luck,
Rustic

Yep, I'll do that Thanks folks, it could be unburned fuel from one cylinder I suppose. I will get the kids to do it :thumbs

Tip:-
Quick reminder, for anyone else considering changing them, when removing glow plugs, or spark plugs, best to use a "T" bar, otherwise a side force can be put on them with a standard wrench, which can snap them off, especially if they are tight :doh:doh

scuse my ignorance ( and stupidity ) , but wouldn't unburnt fuel give black smoke instead of blue smoke ? ...... ignore me I know nuffin

my old vw t4 gave plumes of whitish smoke when the plugs were on the way out, i associate dark smoke with engine oil/rings myself.

The problem is what is blueish smoke? It can be a matter of opinion.
Blueish, is very similar to greyish, depending on the mix.
Greyish is very similar to whitish.
Black when mixed with lots of white looks greyish.

Might also be compounded by two problems, also cold day, high humidity etc

I know when I once fitted a poor fuel filter that the smoke was definitely white, so much so, My neighbours thought we had a new pope. :lol:lol:lol

Certainly I think we hope it's not oil, always sounds expensive repairs coming up, so best eliminate the cheap ones first.

Oil issues, and blue smoke do tend to occur at any time when the engine is running, not just at start up.
Also leaking valve stems and Piston rings, usually show themselves on the overrun, ie under engine braking.

I guess an over-run could also show up faulty bearings and seals on the Turbo too.

Edit:- just thinking, the over-run on a diesel is not the same as a petrol, as a petrol engine on the over-run has a throttle plate, so can create a partial vacuum and suck in oil and diesels don't have that... hmm... I'm a bit confused on that one.

Glow plugs first, injectors second, if one is not atomising it will cause the lumpy running and smoke at idle but clear as revs pick up, diesels just shut the fuel on the over run but are still drawing full air into chamber so maintain max compression which gives engine braking on the over run, Rick

Thanks again, I suspect plugs, the smoke is mostly white with a possible bluish tint. But diesel is oily and the smoke was fogging one of our other cars which is dark blue.

is there more than one type of glow plug or are they all the same?

Two types, Td version cheaper than Tdi version different sizes. Milners have them, I find TDK the best.
