Can someone shed some light on why my SWB terrano 2 is so scary in the wet. It seems that it takes very very little effort for the rear to break away whilst cornering. Roundabouts, junctions and gentle curves are now seemingly very risky affairs.

Am I missing something, or is this normal??

I need to know what the correct tyre pressures should be as well as I have no idea!

Have you changed the iol in rear diff as this can cause problems if wrong oil used.Tyre pressure for the lwb is 28psi if that helps.
 
Yeah I would say rear diff oil. Have a look as there are some previous posts regarding the diff.

eek. that sounds like something I've not done before.
Presumably I can buy the oil fairly easily? The handling is pretty shocking round corners so keen to sort. Will check the psi now if someone can tell which oil I need I'll do that too.

This is information from other members....I have used it when buying oil...


Manual Gearbox: 3.5 litres

Front Diff: 1.5 litres

Transfer Box : 2.3 litres

Rear Diff (LSD) 2.8 litres

PAS 1.8 litres

Below is what other members have used;

Front diff Gbox and Transferbox; Castrol Systrans 75W85 Fully synthetic gear oil.

Rear diff CRX LS 80W90 semi synthetic LSD oil


Below is a list of different answers on what type of oils to use.

From Nissan dealers (After contacting dealer Tech helpline):

BOTH diffs:- Hypoid 90 grade LSD oil in both axels
Dexron Automatic transmission fluid API GL4 in Gbox AND Transfer box

Internet (various sites):

Rear diff LSD oil API GL-5 SAE 80W90
Front diff and gbox Synthetic gear oil 80W95
Transfer box Dexron ATF API GL4

Castrol guidebook:

Front diff Gbox and Transferbox Fully Synthetic Gear oil
Rear diff LSD oil

Take a copy of your V5C 'Reg Doc' you will get the right stuff then.
 
Hi Quarryman :smile: if you are running 235/75R15 tyres your pressures should be 26 front & 30 rear for a SWB :smile: I would change the diff oil as everyone has said as it will help a lot well it did for me :smile: Mind you I still find that my SWB can still be a bit twitchy in the wet at times :roll:
 
also tyres have alot to do with it ive bin told if your on off road or 50/50 road use
 
My friends T2 is the best corning 4x4 I know of, and it has BFG MT's on.
 
when buying the oil for the rear diff or having someone else change it for you it is critical that true LSD limited slip diff oil is used.

Quarryman, Caldo Oils in St Helens stock all of the oils you will need, have counter sales too, IIRC 5 litres of LSD oil was £12 the last time I was in there.

If its any consolation, my SWB with MT tyres and the Powerbox can really easily loose the back end, no trying needed, probably needs to be a lttle fater than 10mph though.

Just a thought, check your rear tyres inner edge tyre wear, if they have been hammered on the front of the vehicle then the inner edge can be almost bald, put these on the back and it can make for some interesting moments in the wet!!!
 
Hi all, have dropped the pressures on the rear slightly, one was over 34 and one was 25(ish) balanced the pair to 28 - am out later so will report then. Have got the dif oil lined up from my motor factors round the corner if I need it (might be worth doing anyway).

The rear tyres are definately 50/50 if not off road boots so this may well be the main reason for the less than stablwe wet handling too!

Your right the diff oil is worth doing but make sure it is LSD oil as it does make a difference. I'm sure your effort with the tyre pressures will help too.

The tyres should have A/T or M/T on them A/T = All Terrain 50/50 on/off road, M/T = Mud Terrain 20/80 on/off road but if you posy whay is wrote on the side wall of the tyre we'll be able to tell you for deff what the tyres are :smile: :smile:
I found after changing to A/T tyres the road holding of mine got so much better & will often let out a churp when they are about to loose grip

Common sense says always loosen the fill plug first, becuase if you drain it first, and the filler plug is siezed, then thats bad news. need to get the quantity right, and some thread sealant on the drain plug will help prevent any leaks.
 
even more basic than that which nut where! I like an idea bofore i get off my ass and onto the ground to do it. I've a manual t2 besides the norm engine oil, p/steering, brake oil what other oils do i need to replace and if poss how often? ta

Funny you mention that Jonathan I put some PTF tape around the threads on the drain plug when I did mine to be on the safe side :lol: I don't know if it's the best thing to use but I have'nt had any drips :smile:
