I bought a 94 Terrano 11 without a MOT which needed a bit of work, but which seemed so good otherwise that I was prepared to spend a bit on it. It had a water pump dribble, so i drove it home carefully watching the temperature gauge, - which suddenly shot up; the engine cut out and I had to be recovered. The diagnosis is certainly a head gasket, but very probably damage to pistons and bore. The cost of a second hand engine plus fitting plus rather more work than I realised for the MOT will probably be upwards of £1300. Would this be a total waste of money? Anyone got a spare 2.7 engine? Or able to do some work at reasonable price? Or interested in buying the vehicle for repair or spares? Or with advice on disposing of it? Seems a shame to write off a nice vehicle, that went very well for 100 miles until it didnt!
Thanks in advance.

Its only my opinion and others will jump in here quickly,

Its a lot of work and money to put in back on the road to be valued at less than the money you spend to do it.

Sorry if its not the response your looking for, but sometimes its better to be blunt and honest.

Full MOT and on road probably worth £1000 or less.

Good luck either way.

Hello Itsmep and welcome,

I think it depends on what you paid for it in the first place, Is it better to try a make a bit of your loss back or lay out even more,

Could you break it yourself?, if you did not pay to much you could easily get your money back on spares, Alloy wheels, Roof rails, Electric window motors ect, ect,

Also i think it depends on how much you can get a replacement engine for as i sold one in running order for £150, But it was removed by the buyer.

Always plenty on e-bay with broken gear boxes,

Hope this helps you decide.

Mav.

are you upto doing head gasket yourself ? even whipping head off for look at piston tops

For me it would depend on how the body work is and how many miles it has done,if the body is immaculate and not to many miles for the year, then i would spend the money.
Would try and do some stuff myself,or if you have any m8's that can do it all the better!!
Ultimately the decision is yours... :?

Where abouts are you itsmeP, there may be someone in the club local to you who could ive you a hand or at least give it a proper inspection before writing the engine off totally. Garages don't like to get involved with engines these days in my experience, they seem to prefer to swap the whole lump as by the time they've got the head off only to find it does need a new lump after all you're already into a big labour bill, its better for them to change the engine complete as that way they can give you a proper indication as to cost.

Hi ItsmeP

Just been surfin' ebay for Nissan stuff & found these that might help

Engine item No. 130183108202
Head item No. 330134479034
Head item No. 270108763250

Good hunting CL

Thanks all of you for responding, your advice really appreciated. The £140 lump was tempting, but I've found a couple of 94's for around £700ish, and I dont think I could buy and install the lump plus get all the welding and other bits done for that price; unless theres someone really fast or cheap out there who could do it. So I think its hello goodbye to my saddo terano, and you'll see it advertised for spares. Anyone want anything? Nice wheels, bull bar, bumpers.... !

First of all welcome to the club, I think you have been given some good advice. If you have bought another Terrano/Maverick, then some of the spares could be good to keep, BUT only if you have the space.
I think you will do quite well with selling the spares as well, re wheels, what type are they, I am looking for a couple of alloy 6 spoke 15" 6J .
I fitted 235 75 R15 on mine. Where are you based?
The Terranos are generally very reliable, with some engines approaching 200k miles, but mine is only just run in with 81k on the clock. That reminds me, due for another oil change...

Hi Rustic,
I do have space, but the flip side of having some is that it fills up with STUFF, and boy is there some in my space! I'm going to put a note on chimney asking Santa to take some away! Anyway, wheels are nice 3 spoke swept back that I,ve never seen before. Centre plate mising on one tho. Sorry they arnt 6 spoke for you!

fire some pics to mav and hell get em in gallery then everyone will see what you wanna sell
