sounds like you need a new starter

so my next question is how much of a job is it to change?

A nightmare!!!!!!! Best tackled via the drivers side wheel arch

I'd check the terminals and cable first before you 100% blame the starter, I thought I had a knackered starter before but then it turned out to be a knackered cable

Yep, it's a easy job if the engine area had more space. A ratchet spanner comes in very handy.

Also stress checking cables/connections, could have the same symptoms.

thanks will go and brave the weather and have a look:thumb2

just looked at cable battery end is tight solenoid end you can move side to side also where the cable trunking is screwed to the side of the block theres a little black wire which is quite loose to could this be the problem?

It's the main 12v + feed (it's the thick cable) you need to check.

Tighten the solenoid bolt if it's loose.

That is probably the power lead to the solenoid.
ALL cable connections should be tight enough so they don't move side to side.

Cleaning the terminals and cable ends will help, with a dab of vaseline on them as you assemble.

CAUTION if you are disconnecting wires that are live, and accidentally touch any other metal work, you could have serious problems.

Burning cables, exploding battery, etc. so any risk, disconnect battery first.

Seems like you may have found your issue :thumb2

Tighten it all up and give it a bit of copper grease and try it then

the thick cable is the one I mean which is loose on the solenoid end it has a rubber cap thingy on it is this the right one:nenau

Yep, should not be loose. Had it with mine, was loose and would start randomly.

tightened the solenoid nut up never had time to clean the connection will do tomorrow but still the same just a click at the solenoid and there seems to be another click like a relay or something seems to be coming from fuse box under bonnet but that's just a guess?

If all's good with the cables, then unfortunately it sounds like a dodgy starter to me mate :doh

I picked mine up for £76 exchange

where did you get it from mate im doing Stafford on Saturday so passing by wednesbury

If it's the same as motorbikes (i dont know) i got shown a really good trick.

My bike starter motor was temperamental, so put it in gear and roll it forwards in gear till you feel the engine "catch" (resistance of engine) then try again, this can somehow engage the starter motor.

Someone may be along to tell me this wont work but worth a try if your stranded :nenau
