after fitting new rear brake shoes and handbrake cable the hand brake doesn't hold at all.iv'e manually adjusted the shoes and tightened up the cable with no joy.there is no more thread left on the handbrake adjuster.have checked and re-checked that the shoes are installed correctly with all the springs etc in the right places.only replaced the rear n/s part of the cable as the rest looked fine.do you think the o/s cable has stretched so i'm not getting an equal pull via the lever.(that will teach me to cut corners if its the case) :?

I'm assuming that you have adjusted the cables by lifting the centre console and adjust the nuts next to the handbrake lever?

i adjusted the one at the side of the handbrake lever on the end of the cable.is this the one you mean?

If you remove the drum and pull the lever dose the shoes move? Also while the drums off press the foot brake and see if the self adjusters are working.

thats gonna be my next job if it ever stops raining.the foot brake is working fine as i can lock the back end up if i brake hard enough.the hand brake only goes up 7 clicks and its not sloppy or easy to pull it up.you can feel the cable pulling but not enough to hold the shoes.when i bought it about a month ago it had just been serviced and there was a comment about the handbrake not being much cop.it was holding on the o/s but not the n/s as the cable had broke.after having a look last weekend i found that the n/s wheel cylinder was leaking.so i replaced the wheel cylinder, brake shoes and the broken part of the handbrake cable.as i said the handbrake is worse than useless now, just wondered if it is something i have over looked. :?

When you take the drum off check that the leaver for the handbrake is'nt catching on any thing like the adjuster stopping it from having full movement :?
Sorry just a thought

wont get chance to have a look until tomorrow evening but will take all your advice and comments in hand while i have a look.thanks for all the input, its just really bugging me as i must have changed shoes, pads, cables etc a thousand times with no probs(ok not that many)but you know what i mean.i even took the hub off my other one and studied it to make sure i had done it right. -banghead- must be the weather :?

 all sorted now  it was the thread on the handbrake cable adjuster.about 5mm of the thread had stripped.put some washers on it to leave only the good thread and its adjusted up fine  thanks for the help everyone, just glad it turned out to be an easy repair
