Just wanting to know, how do i adjust the handbrake to take up the slack on the cable.
also any other things to check before the dreaded MOT on Wednesday. ive welded the sills, polybushed everything thats rubber at the front, changed the roll bar links and fitted a couple of rubbers to the alloys.

HB is adjusted under the centre console. You can just about get them without completely removing it though :thumb2
Make sure you adjust the shoes first.

Make sure you adjust the shoes first.

You MUST slacken off the hand brake adjuster first, you can use a 3/8 drive 10mm socket, push aside the plastic part under the handbrake, and you will see the nyloc nut.

Now remove the rear drums and adjust the auto adjusters that don't auto adjust. You might need a couple of m8 bolts to ease off the rear drums.

This will get all the slack out of the rear brakes, then take up the slack on the adjustment on the hand brake.

Use some brake cleaner too, clean the shoes, and wipe out the drum.

You will be amazed what a difference this makes.

I swear my auto adjusters are somehow slackening off the rear drums every time I use the brakes

I adjusted in the drums and then took hbrake up on cable slightly so it was on 5 notches with no binding. After 5k miles hbrake is now coming up all the way and is completely useless !

I can't believe ive worn the rears that much in 5k ??

Isn't there a download in quick links about adjusting the hand brake cables? I've used it in the past because you have to be carefull with the window switches.

the nylock nut comes loose, on the old truck i put a locking nut on to stop it doing this

Remeber you need both rear wheels of the ground if you want to rotate the drums when adjusting the brakes. It can be dificult to take off the drums if the cable isn't slackened due to the ridge which is left has the drums wear. You should file or grind off this ridge before you attempt to put the drums back.

If you just want to just take up slack in the cable then you can just adjust the 10 m not.

To lift the central console the are six screws to remove. Two in the cubby hole , two under the gear lever cover and two under the cover under the handbrake lever. You can lift up the cosole enough to squease in your hand and spanner. If you lift it to high you could pull the wires off the switches but I have done it many time without trouble.

Regards. Bri

Before you do anything on the rear brakes try the TEST BUTTONS on the back plate, with the hand brake OFF the button should not go in more than 1mm if it goes in more then the HB cable is adjusted too much and will need backing off first, Rick
