Handbrake clunk

Hi Rag1873

Had a similar problem with my T2. When I released the handbrake there was a clunk and the car lurched forward/backwards, depending on whether I was going in forward gear or in reverse, when the brake shoes suddenly released.

On examination turned out to be a leaking wheel cylinder that had contaminated the rear brake shoes causing them to stick. New cylinder and shoes did the trick.

Assuming you don't have rear discs, you might try taking off the rear drums and checking the shoes for contamination.

Regards CL

When you take off the brake drums I would also check that the shoes are not sticking to the backing plates, I always put a drop of copper grease on the backing plates where the shoes come into contact

i also agree with sweety and cl while you have the drum off make sure the rear diff half shaft oil seal is not leaking

Thanks for your help. Looks like on the 1st dry day i'll be taking the rear wheels off!!

Just washed the motor and discovered that the nearside rear wheel was covered in oil!!!! Aaaaaghhhh!!

oil or brake fluid if its oil check diff oil before you run it dry break fluid will be rear cylinder fairly easy job!
