I've had issues with the handbrake since I had my T2. Now, with the car on stands for the weekend I decided to have a proper look.

In the end: it seems one of the handbrake cables is a few cm longer than the other; this one also is seized solid somewhere inside. I think some previous owner installed a LWB one...

Already ordered a replacement (damn expensive they are!), but I'm struggling to get the old cable out of the drum.
Any tips?

I also have to compliment Nissan on placing the bolts holding the HB cable coupler right above the propshaft. Bolts do shear, and now I have to take the propshaft off to get the sheared off bolt out of the bracket :banghead:

I found the retaining clip - very well hidden in between the brake dust and the rust. Will post pictures tomorrow. No idea if I'll need it for the new cable, so I made sure it is not broken.

Well done, I've got the handbrake to look at on the wifes truck so your pics will be handy:thumbs

Yep they are not cheap,I paid 60 quid a side when I had to replace mine:eek:

Well, if you have to replace the HB cables, do prepare to shear every single bolt holding it up. I'm now past caring, just drill out all the captive nuts and replace with bolt + nut.

For jims-terrano: here is a picture of the clip that holds the cable into the HB drum back plate:

I had to push the rubber around the cable into the hole at the back of the drum, and then I could persuade the clip to come out with a flat screwdriver.

Seems to be a sort of one-way clip; you can push it in the drum, but the prongs sticking out on the side prevent it coming out again.

Dead easy, once you find the damn clip. I only got it in the end by pushing the outer rubber cable thing into the back of the drum.
