Good Morning All.

Yesterday afternoon I was using the workshop download (21 I think), with the intention of adjusting the handbrake, All was going according to plan, until I removed the passenger side rear brake drum, and found that all the components within were covered with oil.

After a short period of time looking at it, and cursing my luck, I took some photographs, however I think that the oil seal may have failed, which is allowing LSD oil to get onto the brake shoes etc.

Has anyone had any experience of replacing this seal. The workshop download indicates that a fair number of special tools are required to get to it. Presumably I will have to (a)replace the shoes on booth sides (in fact the other side shows signs of a tiny bit of oil weeping as well), (b)oil seals both sides, and (c)would it be worth changing the bearings at the same time, whilst its all apart?

I am willing to have a go (and would like too), but don't want to get it apart, and get stuck because I need specialist equipment. At the moment I can put the wheels back on and drive it to a garage.

Please see image below. Any advice gratefully received...

Thanks

Alan

If it just oil seal then you don't have to replace bearing but if its the grease seal then u have to damage the bearing to get it off and replace the grease seal u need to find out what needs doing but if u buy the bearing from millers online then u get all the seals I think but make sure u order the right 1 as they sell just the wheel bearing on its own good luck

I had my rear seal replaced by a garage, when mine leaked, BUT it had to go in again 2 weeks later as the problem reocurred.

The real problem was that the bearing went, so bear this in mind.

Check play in the bearing first.

best regards,
Rustic

That was nearly as good as zippy joke's:lol

Thanks for the replies chaps. I've done a bit of searching on the net, and on YouTube, but couldn't find anything that was similar to a Terrano to get an idea of the magnitude of the work involved.

Geoffdown... have you done this job on your Terrano, and if so did you need a lot of special tools, and how long did it take?

Rustic... what did the garage charge you for this job? It's still an option for me if not silly money.

Thanks & Regards

Thanks for the reply. I looked in the download section, but didn't see it before. That alone gives me some confidence to attempt the job.

I think I will have a go at the weekend.

Well I managed to get the offending half shafts out, and remove the oil seals from the axles, which I was pleased with.

I 'welked out' on trying to remove the bearings, and got my local garage to do it, with their press. I have the half shafts back now, and all cleaned up ready for reinstallation. Just waiting for new brakes shoes, and wheel cylinders from Milners now.

Couple of questions if someone could help... Should I refit the shafts then install the new brakes etc, or would it be easier (and warmer) to do it in the garage on the bench?

Also when removing the handbrake cables from the lever on the shoes, the little clyndrical spring clips fell to pieces. Anyone know where I can get some of these?

Regards

Alan
