good link....but it makes my blood boil all these NIMBYs, especially those arrogant horsey people. If theres a rogue element then jump on it. I mean they don't shut the M1 because of speeding cars do they, they nick 'em.

Well same goes offroad FGS!:doh:doh:doh:doh

Very sore subject to me, as you know Karl i'm the main moderator for green-lane subjects on the other forum.
There are tons of threads on there on similar subjects.

There was a nationwide survey recently on the subject, and its not looking good.

It appears the only folk who want the lanes to remain open to vehicles are the folk who drive the vehicles, no one else wants us there.
Sad thing is they dont realise what we do to keep the lanes in a usable condition... when closed to vehicles they will likely become overgrown and lost forever. Plus there is the work groups do to make repairs to damaged lanes, we at the other forum organised one such day a couple of years back.

The problem is of course down to the idiots, and of course the ones who just simply do not know the green lane code of conduct. I didnt until I was told!
So its our job to watch out for abusers and not think twice of reporting them, sad thing is most folk wouldnt.
Seem to remember a thread on the response forum where someone was witnessed "off-piste" at Rivington... yet no one thought of videoing it with a phone, taking the reg and reporting it.
I would have and already have!

if it was the 90 we only saw it when it was down we heard it coming but it was about 7pm so was dark so cams and all that would be useless

one forum i am a member of are going to tackle it head on with numbers ;)

now all those that have been green lanning, over a day or a weekend or even a week in some cases, work out how much money you spend on each trip

average for the weekend is about £250 and for the day is about £75 including fuel

now how many people normally go to these things? on average arround 20 or so

so the day events based on 20 people going works out in the region of about £1500 per event spent in the area

weekend events on the same basis £5000

and how many of these events take place ? weekenders normally 3 or 4 so about £15,000-£20,000 a year per forum so say 15 forums (their is more but it evens its slf out with less people going from some places)

works out £225,000-£300,000 per year

then the day trips now their is pretty much one every month so

£18,000 per year but their are more forums that do this over weekends so say 25 forums
£450,000

so can the government ignore £675,000 spent just by 4x4 owners

versus the cost of repair to said lanes ?

would it be worth having the green lane code of conduct posted on here? even as a dowload?

Yeah gotta mention the code of conduct! They say 4-5 is the maximum number of vehicles to be using a lane at one time :thumbs

20 vehicles is far too many to travel a green lane! Its big groups that are causing a lot of concern. i'd recommend when organising a green lane trip make it a cut off at 5 vehicles, it just saves bad attention.

Its a difficult one... when used they deteriorate, when not used they can become over grown very quickly

NOT A PROBLEM!

Leave it with me, we have it as a sticky thread on the other forum. I'll sort it tomorrow :thumb2

ah but a forum that is responsible will only allow groups of 5 at any 1 time

thats exactly what is recommended the problem comes when their is a group of 10 go all at once down a single lane

the speed is also a major concern it is not necessarily the volume of traffic that cause the damage but the way in which it is driven their is an advised max speed of 12mph yet bikes are 25mph according to the trf

thing is about that video why wasn't craig or lara or even glass involved in the story ?

the minority ruin it for the majority:(

versus the cost of repair to said lanes ?

peter these lanes are covered by the millions they get off every motorist from the road fund license (car tax)

pete we are also talking about responsible 4x4 users not the tossers you see on you tube trying to jump a paj or disco as high as possible

so really we are talking minimal damage

thats just the amount of money that is spent just to enjoy the lanes not to destroy them mate

and actually most of the damage to the lanes is through neglect of the lanes drainage and what not, not buy a car going down them have you seen what tractors do to some of the lanes we have been excluded from ??

i dont agree with the people that veer off the lane's on the moors and destroy the country side

if they close the lanes then what would be next no 4x4's in the city/village centers

1 thing that was thrown up was if their was a tax to pay to use the lanes say £50 per year for your car to drive them i would happily pay that if all the lanes were to reopen to the 4x4's that are drivable

ok lets put it a different way for you

me and a friend have been in talks with a local charity for disabled children

what we plan to offer is a day away from the city for children to places like the peak district and with out the use of green lanes their are places these children would not be able to get to and they would never see just because they cant get up a bumpy lane that is a little steep

is it fair that a child who is physically able to walk these lanes can see these places and not the disabled child

of course its not fair , but thats a different issue in some respects , my concern is the damage caused to our beautifull countryside by inconsiderate users of these lanes

nice idea!

but pete you are taring us all with the same stick

i havnt damaged any lanes that i have driven, have only damaged my car on play sites, and i dont intend to damage the lanes that i will drive on again

why should i not get the use of these lanes just because the person before was pulling donuts on them

i agree karl , but unfortunately a lot of people who make decisions dont see things that way, near where i live we had a great place to play at denholme ..... its now blocked off by big stone boulders ..... i regularly see bikers tearing around there..... as a ex biker myself ( road racer granted ) im horrified at the damage they used to do . as for road tax used for reparing lanes , i doubt that very much , its more like local councils using the community charge funds to pay for damage to lanes , and we all know whats going to happen to that fund once the fiscal measures bite

its still part of the road network so should be covered by it

i know what you mean tho

saldy its bikers who are the worst in my opinion, but equally, even 5-6 4x4s fitted with mud tyres will quickly shred most tracks in winter unless on bedrock.

Freaking ramblers and horse-arses have tens of thousands of miles of routes they can use while we have a tiny little fraction of that left to us.

Not ALL bikers though, there are plenty of us bikers that have tons of respect for the lanes and their other users. :thumb2

I like to gently plod around the lanes on my bike, well used too (dont ride much anymore :( )

Agree but there is a larger looney contingent I think relative to 4x4. One of the main reasons the Ridgeway got permanently closed was a huge bunch of bikers who basically trashed an Iron Age burial mound by using it over many weeks as their playground. Complete morons.

I suspect the problem is that two wheels are a lot cheaper then four in a lot of cases so attract more skags.....

But that TV piece even managed to make the lads on the private PnP look like dumbasses.....and frankly I can't think of a better way of keeping yoof entertained and educated. The media as usual has a lot to answer for.
