Grand Vitara 4wd

Does anyone know if the 4H mode on a Grand Vitara can be used on icy roads? My mate put his in 4H mode and it disengaged at about 25MPH. Is this normal or is there something broken? Thanks for your help.

Sounds like something broken as once in 4x4 it should stay until disengaged.
It didn't jump out due to being not put in properly engaged in 4H the first place by any chance?

Pretty sure it was properly engaged, just not too sure if the Vitara will run on tarmac in 4WD mode. He says it was like this since he bought it a couple of years ago. I will try get to drive it myself next time I see him.
