let see if you can help me on this question lol, i managed to fix my terminals on my dashboard tonight, so had the heater light showing for the first time for a while but it only appears like 2 secs while testing direct from glow plug with meter it shows it stays on about 10 secs, most vehicles i use the glow plug warning light stays on longer then what i'm seeing atm.

From my understanding they heat up at full pelt for a couple of seconds which is when you see the light on the dash. Then they drop to kind of a half setting until engine is at a certain temp. May be warmer weather they are only on for the ten seconds that you mention and then when it's cold stay on for a lot longer. This is controlled by the ECU, sounds to me like it's all working OK. Have you got some kind of problem that was making you think it was the glow plug's?

Jim

On the TDI the ecu determines how much glow is needed pre-start, and then after start up, switches to a pulsed glow until the engine reaches about 50degC.

10 seconds sounds a long time to me .... ive timed mine and its only 5 seconds :nenau

Good job on fixing the dash. :clap As said above, think normal operation is glow plugs stay on for a few seconds at full power and then another few seconds at lower power. But the light on the dash only stays on while they are at full power. If the engine is warm the glow plug light on the dash may not come on at all. If the engine is cold I would have thought the light staying on for 10 seconds would be a bit long and two seconds a bit short. My T2 would be closer to briggies when cold at about 5 seconds. If you are having no problem with start and it fires straight away on turn of key then I would have thought you were probably ok though.

i know its unrelated but i always forget to wait for the glow plugs and my car allways sounds like a complete knacker chugging and smoking every morning
:(
