Hi guys, have copied my orignal post into this new topic, i'm sorry it's another auto hub topic but i'm really in need of some help!

Right have took both front hubs of this morning and from looking at the blown up diagram from the workshop manual i don't even have ''Brake A'' pieces on either side. I removed the hub housing and was left with ''snap ring'' (circlip), ''washer B'', ''washer A'' and ''Brake B'' on the shaft.

Should ''Brake A'' be a seprate part on the shaft or is it within the hub housing?

Many many thanks for any advice!

When you look at the inside of the hub you will see the main splined part, this has lugs on that engage with the brake ring. My brake rings used to jam on to this main part of the hub. If you want to see exactly what the hub should look like see the workshop on cleaning the auto lockers. It is very possible that someone has removed the brake rings due to them breaking.

I have found brake A stays in the hub part after removing and without removing the grease in the hub you may not see it.

The hubs look indentical to the hub in the workshop download so as toolbox suggests then maybe ''brake A'' has been removed!!

In your opinons would i be best to replace ''brake A'' (what costs would be involved in this??) or shall i go for manual hubs?

Thanks for your very valued advice!

You can buy a kit from Nissan I think it contains the break ring you need around £40 a side if I remember correctly.
I would stick with the autos myself, but many others have fitted manual hubs and swear by them for reliability, I suppose it’s down to how often you go off road.
Planks a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to manual hubs if you need any info.

Well i spoke to milners and they quoted me about £137 for a pair of manual hubs including vat and p&p. I use my terrano day to day for getting to work so i think the manual's would maybe be better choice. I'll have to get in touch with Plank and see how he rate's them!

Thanks again for your help!

just recently changed my autos for a set of avm manuals from milners, dead easy to fit, nice smooth locking action,it`s sorted my grinding noise i had from the left hand wheel,i know when they are locked that i get 4wd unlike before and best of all i am getting better mpg..about 3 more but added up at the end of the month made quite a difference as i put on average £240 per month of diesel in.

For an everyday truck autos are the way to go, for a weekend off roader manuals are said to be more reliable but having said that mines a weekend off roader and I've got autos which have been 100% since I changed the BRAKE rings. (Brake in caps as its brake not break - think its a translation thing nd should be clutch rings as thats what they are).

All depends how often you use 4x4 and when etc, personally couldn't be bothered getting in and out in all the rain and mud etc so have stick with autos, which have been fine since a put some replacement (but used) brake rings in, the original ones were just worn out.

The way I look at it is the odd time I need 4wd is usually expected so I lock the hubs before I set off. One day I may well come across the need for 4wd unexpectedly and then I may get my feet muddy. My Brake Rings went twice and even over heated a hub. Since changing to manuals I've not had any problems. I have to say that staying with auto's is a good idea in the fact that you don't need to manual lock the hubs but it really has not caused me a problem until today. I knew I would encounter some mud so got down and looked at the hubs and they were already locked, wife locked em for the snow the other week and forgot to unlock them but no harm done other than a bit of extra fuel used.

Well i've counted up my pennies and i'm definatly going to go for the manuals, i don't need the 4wd everyday and knowing my luck if i did rebuild the auto's they would only go and brake again!

Better ring milners first thing monday and order a pair!!

One thing though Jim, you were saying that you wife had left the hubs locked in, had you then used it on road etc before you realised they were locked in?

It's fine to use them locked as long as you have not engaged 4wd, all that happens which is a good thing from time to time is that it turns the fron drive shafts and transfer box. Not sure how they would react to motorway speeds but in theory should be OK. The later T2 have fixed fron hubs so they are perminantly locked. PM Plank or see his workshop on fitting them but don't use as much grease as he first suggested. I did find that one of the splined washers that I left on caused an occasional clicking noise so I simply removed it and all has been fine since. The alluminium case of the manual hubs is nice and shiney when you get them but they soon dull, may be a bit of masking tape and some spray on laquer wouldn't be a bad idea.

go with the manual avm hubs,

the workshop on the mauals was done by plank and myself to aid members, i went through 2 sets of replacement snap rings a.k.a. brake/break rings, they are cheaper from ford than nissan by the way.

AVM hubs rock da house lol

Ordered manual hubs today, £137.40 for the pair including vat and postage. Didn't thnk that was to bad at all!!

excellent move..exactly same price as mine, money well spent.

any qne help here??

Well it's metal on metal, mine got a good coat of grease and as Plank says not as much as the workshop shows. Mine have not come to any harm.
