Well did a long needed service on the 1975 generator today and discovered two bad points, 1st a sheared bolt on the drive coupling and 2nd the tail bearing is seized and the shaft is rotating in the bearing, fortunately plenty of grease there to stop a complete failure, so major job to strip this down plus the shaft is worn about 20 thou, so just replacing the bearing is not an option, looks like I will have to remove the rotor and have a machine shop turn the end down and push on a sleeve which will then be machined to the correct size for a new bearing, but all this has to be done quickly as can only go a week without it otherwise will have to visit launderette to get clean stuff to wear, this is the shaft and bearing very lucky that the bearing number is visible near the bottom 6207z so already ordered and on it's way, pics of the work will follow, Rick

While this is all stripped out I will be looking at swapping the flywheel for one with a ring gear so that I can use a starter motor instead of the crappy alternator start system that uses a solenoid to operate the the linked decompressor levers so that when starting it spins up to speed that generates 24v dc to pull the decompressors off, but it is a crap system that most times does not work without manual intervention to throw the levers, but not sure at this time if the flywheel from an SR will fit an ST series, time will tell, Rick

That's almost as old as me and in better shape before your service :lol
Are original parts still available for these?

Yes parts are still available from specialist suppliers, but things like bearings are off the shelf regular parts, Rick
