Has anybody knowledge or experience of a gearbox rear mount becoming un-bonded? Terranokid and Iandouglas have spoken of it on other threads but not in any detail.

I've just had the brakes and rear tailpipe on my '96 Terrano 2.7 dsl replaced and my friendly garage mechanic says he noticed that the mounting has broken. Any effect is not noticeable until pulling in fifth gear at about 65 mph, when there is some vibration from the transmission.

Anyone know a source for a new one and approximate cost?

Regards CL

GEARBOX REAR MOUNT

HI CaptLimey
Been off roading today including stannage and gearbox thrashing about all over the place on rough ground bangs up into floor pan due to age and oil contamination its been getting worse for last 3 years .
NOW its time to change it, am going to call local nissan dealer on monday all they need is chassis no will post up how i get on.
JOB WISE it looks pretty straight forward trolley jack under gearbox
and unbolt and slip new one in place .
THERE THAT WAS EASY WASNT IT
PS.
very little space between gearbox and floorpan approx 3/4 " 8O

You can always drop the cross member, if you are struggling.
To quote an old work college “the longest way is often the quickest way”

Hi Iandouglas and Toolbox

Thanks for the posts. I'll be very interested in what price you get Ian. Yes it looks a simple enough job - once you get the part. I'm not sure where I'll find one here in France but a price guide from the UK will be useful. I look forward to your next post.
Regards CL

hi .Capt.Limey.
Not good news i am afraid spoke to sally at local nissan dealers
needs to be paid for then ordered in and it costs arm and a leg £81.47p.
:(
bit better news .spoke to local ford dealers needs to be paid for then ordered in .
£41.50p. :? :? :? :?
both inclusive of VAT.
I DONT KNOW IT THEY ARE INTERCHANGEABLE
would be worth checking part nos ect.
mine has not parted company just old and oil contamination has weekened it.allowing gearbox to bang on floor when in the rough.
am thinking may be able to bolt straight through after drilling rubber.
cut pieces of old tyre ect together and make your own. :p
SORRY NOT GOOD NEWS.

Gearbx rear mount failure

Hi Iandouglas

And thanks for the bad news! At least I've got a financial reference point to work from.

There is a surprisingly huge price difference between Ford and Nissan -WHY- I can't imagine the two parts are not the same piece of kit??? Why would Nissan/Ford change such a basic part, it must surely perform the same function, i.e. support the gearbox? Perhaps a Maverick man can enlighten us?

Questions - what did you ask for? was it the same described part for a Maverick as a Terrano? Was there a 'trade name' for it?

I'll do some research here in La belle France and see what I can come up with. But I suspect I'll have to go to the Nissan dealer, order, pay up and smile!

Many thanks for your input. Best Regards, CL

GEARBOX REAR MOUNT

hi c.l.
i asked for a rear gearbox mounting rubber and went on to discribe the way it sits between g.box and cross member.
new tack i have applied to PARTS GATEWAY FOR A SECOND HAND ONE .
parts gateway is a search company that locates second hand parts from
uk breakers.
dont know if they will bother with a mounting rubber .
will keep you posted

Hi Iandouglas

Thanks for the update and info on Parts Gateway. I'm not too sure that a recovered part is a good idea for me, as well as shipping costs from the UK to France, I might just be buying a 'time bomb' that would fail sooner than a new locally purchased part.

Guess I'll just bite the bullet and pay the local main agent's asking price. But - being forearmed with the information you have supplied I'll have a better idea of just how much I'm being ripped off for! We shall see.....

Again thank for the update, best regards CL.

its well documented on here mate order from ford it arrives in nissan box lol

GEARBOX REAR MOUNT

HI CAN ANYONE CONFIRM THE GEARBOX MOUNT RUBBER IS THE SAME FOR NISSAN TERRANO AND FORD MAVERICK.
PARTS GATEWAY WANT £39 50 INCLUDING DELIVERY FOR SECOND HAND
FORD NEW WANT £42.00

Hi Guys

Local Nissan dealer can supply new replacement for 65 euros (46 quid), close enough to your cheaper Ford option Iandouglas. Part number on their computer under motor and suspension/gearbox is shown as 11320. So I've ordered it and will get my local friendly garage mechanic to fit it. After all, he says he can do it in less than half an hour and his hourly rate (here in France) is only 33 euros (23 quid). Worth a just more than a tenner just to stay clean and dry!

Thanks to all for advice, CL

Hi Guys
Collected my new gearbox mount from Nissan (France) today at the total cost of 55 euros (40 quid), very reasonable I thought. It will be on the beast by the week-end. It'll be interesting to see if there's any noticeable difference in the ride/handling. I'll post the result.

GEARBOX REAR MOUNT

HI CL.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE ITS MADE WE WENT GREEN LANING LAST SATURDAY NO BANGS :p :p :p

Hi all

Happy(ish) end to the story. Had local friendly mechanic fit the piece to the beast and she drives a little smoother, no transmission vibration that used to happen in 5th around 65 mph. But he found that the universal joint at the front end of rear prop shaft was very stiff to the point of almost seized. Following liberal application of the grease gun we'll see if it frees itself up now that it can't move the gearbox!

Thanks to all for the posts. CL
