It's broke again  When the engine is running (tick over) & out off gear there is a rattle from the g/box, I thought it was just the clutch release bearing playing up as i've had cars with this sound & after replacing the cluch (worn out) the noise went away  Hummingbird heard the noise & kindly told me it might be the primary shaft bearings (hope i've got that right HB)
So i'm wondering if anyone has had this problem & what action had to be taken & a rough cost. The g/box has only done 67K so i'm thinking of having it repaired as a second hand one could have the same or an other problem  I will be having a new clutch fitted whilst the box is out to save cost in the future.
I will be most greatfull for any help

Just to clarify for neil.

The noise is when the box is out of gear but the clutch is engaged (up), with the clutch disengaged (down) it goes away, so I suspect its an input shaft/ main drive gear bearing issue, hopefully not for Neils sake.

The noise isn' t the usual rumbling bearing sound, its a rythmic thumping type noise.

Can't remember who but we've a gearbox specialist on here these days, he offered to do rebuilds out of hours at home for the cost of the parts IIRC, was midlands based though and wanted the gearbox (not the car) bringing to him. However he may be able to diagnose the problem remotely. The largest part of the cost could we end up bing the removal and refitting, if you could do that yourself the repair might not be too expensive.

Some time soon I'm going to do my clutch myself, though I'll probably enroll the help of some extra bodies to lift the box out and back in.

yep believe it or not hes using name "GEARBOXMAN" lol the older terras used to have gearbox probs but bit more miles than yours thought theyd uprated box aswell

What's it like say going down hill still in gear and you press the clutch in, if it is the input shaft it will still rumble. I guess...
If it's the clutch it should stop.
Just a thought..

You seem only to hear it at tick over when you are driving you don't hear anything :? It shuts up as soon as you press the clutch down :? :?

Second hand box & tansfer box on ebay at the moment.

Cheers for that Jonathan I missed that earlier  Plus it's only 20-30 miles away from me so could get it picked up  Going to call into Ford tomorrow to see what they say & get a price off them  I know it'll be the earth but will give the warranty company anothe call to see if they will pay up this time or say it's wear & tear like they did with the power steering pipes

Sweety, if the bearing has gone on the input shaft it is normal to expect a roaring noise when driving under light load on the flat or down hill and this normally goes quiet when in fourth gear.

It could possibly be your clutch plate centre rattling, I have had a rattle with mine that seems to come and go when stationary with clutch pedal up been there for the last 20k or so and I am convinced it’s the clutch, just waiting for it to develop which it does not seem to be doing LOL.
I had a bearing go in my last T2 gearbox, although the gearbox in my present one is different to the early one and hopefully better, famous last words! It was an all-together different noise to what I have now.

werent there a recall on tdis ripping center outve clutch ages ago

Funny you should say that Toobox it has stopped making the noise twice in the last 24hours & on the long'ish hill climb we did on Sunday before stopping for lunch i'm sure I got a whiff of the clutch :?
I'm sure this motor's making me go bald

Just take it back to where ever you bought it, if you can't get it back before the warranty expires give them a ring and report the problem, that way you should still get it fixed. As its under warranty I shouldn't bother trying to work out what the noise is, just take it back and let them worry about that. Only issue would be if they try to say its wear and tear, but as the clutch isn't slipping even if if the plate has failed thats failure not wear and tear.

I have contacted the warranty company so it's now logged down. I went to a ford dealer i've used before as the forman was I top guy & knew his stuff, but he has now left :( & their labour rate is £77 an hour 8O So may try nissan dealer to see what they say

hope everything goes ok neil,i nevr heard anything on sunday but then i never really was listening at your motor, was to busy listening for any strange noises and bangs from mine!!

Wasn't a recall, more an acknowledgement of a problem. Symptom is slipping clutch first before the centre tears itself out.

Also on ebay at the moment is a terrano gearbox repair kit - £50 at the moment.

Well i've been to the only Nissan dealer there is left near me  I went to the service desk & asked is someone could have a quick listen to rattle noise on my G/box. He said that he did'nt have enough lads & they were to busy to have a quick look & would have to book it in 8O I asked what the hourly rate was & was told £82 8O 8O 8O He then said it was prob the main shaft nut has come loose   I then told him it was a Terrano & then I asked roughly how much to fix it & got told it'll be about £800-900 to fix it if it was the nut that has come loose
Now the funny bit I can't think of a G/box that has nuts holding in the shafts & had a look at my mannual & I can't find a nut on the main shaft

think if u go back into ebay threads there was post about chap doing the rebuilds on buy it know basis could be same chap, wonder if 6 speed navara box would fit?
