After reading past posts on the forum it seems like i may have a big problem with my gearbox on my 2004 2.7tdi 5dr terrano :-(
When you turn the engine off the gear stick wobbles back and 4 as if the rubber mount is gone underneath also there seems to be a back pressure noise on switch off in the box.

1. have checked gearbox mount, engine mounts and shook the box back and 4 but can not find any problems.

2 Have noticed that there is green oil on the bell housing, so what is recommended please.

3 Driving in euro land at the end of the month and expecting to do 3000 miles - will i make it.

The gear box leaks a little on my terrano but it's ok. Been told they can leak a little over time. The gearbox oil should be gold, not green

Just been for a run in the T2 and noticed from 3rd to 2ND there was a bit of a judder, I think me clutch is showing signs of being cupput :-(. I don't want to risk 3000 miles in Europe so i will have to price one up and get on with the job.

Gold?? mine is Comma GL4 75W 90 - clear oil

Mines like golden syrup. I was told by the mechanic / dads mate that you can run a number of differant oils in the transmisions. When I found out from you guys it's gl4, I told mr bodge, he said it doesn't really matter.:rolleyes: ain't going there again. I'll do it myself:D

He is right, it does not really matter..........To him! :doh

To you though it matter a bloody lot, :lol

Thanks for the posts, I will order a New Clutch and bits on Thursday and when i have chance at the weekend or early next week i will get the clutch out, As for the oil yep you were right it is gold so the box may have to be dropped out then to get at the seal. To replace the oil seal is that a pig of a job or straight forward and has any one done one before on the later models 2.7 Tdi 2004. Bearing in mind that i have a very good work shop with lots of lifting gear and have fitted clutches to T2s in the past. :)

What about Carlube Hypoid EP80W GL4 for the gearbox, or does it have to be 75W90 GL4:nenau

EP80 can be used, this is stated in the manual as in hotter climates the oil would be less viscous.
If however you live in U.K - 75W 90 GL4 would be the correct oil otherwise it is too viscous.

Many people think putting a thicker oil into the box will reduce noise and prolong the life of the box

It actually shortens the life of the box.:doh

For example - when a bearing spins in a closed seat, the oil is driven out of the bearing by centrafugal forces, if the oil is less viscous it will flow back into the bearing at a given rate. Oil is a coolant, particularly in a gearbox - thicker oil will also be thrown from the bearing but the oil does not replenish fast enough into fast moving components and starves them of oil causing excess heat build up destroying bearing surfaces.

Don't be worried about oils looking thin, particularly when hot, technology has moved on from the old toffee thick oils of years ago.
