hi all just purhased a 1994 nissan Terrano with a nackerd gearbox so i need to change the box is there any threads or tips on how it comes out.
Done landrover before but not nissan going to do it on my drive.
I have a engine lift normalely i would push the arm into the cab and a strop to lower down through the gear lever hole and pull gearbox out from under the vehicle.
what do i have to take off to do this job.

You will need to remove the crossmember that holds the torsion bars as the gearbox wont clear it.Do you have a replacement box

Do the torshon bars have to come out complete.

We did your drive plate Pete, and took the easier option of removing the engine, the box is a big bit of kit and the only way I would attempt it on the ground is with a cradle on wheels with a lift, one could be made from a small trolley jack, but a trolley jack does not have enough width on its wheels to stop side ways topple so it would need to be fixed to something wider, but the big problem is not letting the box drop in or out with the first motion shaft in the clutch centre plate, bend it and its finished, Rick
 
Incidently there is a Maverick (petrol) at out local breakers with a manual box, no idea what it is like of course, Hastings East Sussex, Rick

Have a gearbox for 1995 2.7td available.You dont need to remove the actual torsion bars its just the crossmember you need to jack it up and unwind the pressure form the bars then it can be removed .Removed a few of these(in a field) you will need to support the weight with trolley jack problems ive had is the bell housing is very tight in the body and need to let it down so the bell housing doesnt hit the body
 
the way i was thinking of doing it was to get the vehicle all four wheels of the ground to give me the hight then engine hoist into the vehicle with a strop down through the gear lever hole (levers removed) to support the weight also trolly jack under the box to help to keep it stable,and allow rearward movement, just torsion bars not sure how to disconect,

Just had a look at starter motor that looks a right bitch to get at.:nenau
 
This may be a bit late but here is a post a did some years ago and have found lurking on my hard drive after not being able to find it on here LOL. Then it was about 8 years ago when I posted it.

“Recently I removed the gearbox (manual) from my Terrano 2.7TD and I have put together some points and tips that may help anyone attempting this task, wether to replace the clutch or repair the transmission.
Firstly, if you are like me and do not have access to an inspection pit or a four-poster ramp, you will have to jack up and support the vehicle on axel stands. Do not support the front under the wheels or the suspension, as you have to release the suspension.
Secondly, disconnect the battery always a good safety precaution.
Thirdly make a note and mark the setting of the front suspension torsion bars. Now slacken their adjusters and remove, prize off the c clips and remove the arms from their splines. You can now withdraw both bars from the front suspension splines. Next unbolt and remove the cross member .
Fourthly, Drain the oils in the transmission, remove the rear prop shaft from the back axel and slide it out of the transfer box, be careful not to damage the seal. Remove the front prop shaft completely. ( I didn’t and found out that the gearbox wouldn’t clear the front joint.)
Fifthly, remove the clutch slave cylinder, leave the pipe on and tie it up out of the way. (no bleeding) next remove wiring breather pipes and taco drive. Inside the vehicle remove the gear stick consol and boot, remove the gear stick and unbolt and disconnect 4wd lever and remove.
Sixthly, place a jack under the rear of the engine, undo the rear mount and cross member under the gearbox and remove. Make a note of which way round the rubber mount is. Now lower the jack under the engine until the engine is almost touching the bulkhead, check the cooling fan is clear of the radiator. (mine had plenty of room.)
Support the gearbox and unbolt it from the engine. Some of the top bolts are easier to access through the engine bay, especially the one at the top of the starter motor. Now withdraw the gearbox. (Its heavy you may need help.)
Do your repair and replace in reverse order.
I found it easier to handle by putting it back in two pieces, the main box on to the clutch first and then the transfer box with gasket, on the back of that.
If you replace the clutch ensure you line up the drive plate hub with the spigot in the flywheel.”
 
Now that looks to be a very useful bit of info, Pete (briggie)can you file this for further use, Rick

front or rear, as the bars will be off i intend to lift the front a few splines as it is nearly on the bump stops,which way do you turn the bar,i beleve you can only move it 3 splines at a time, is that right,

does the startermotor come of with the engine bolts?

The “c” clips are at the rear, removing them is required to give enough room to get the arms out, nothing holds the front in, you will need to mark the position of the arms at the back and also where they go in at the front to put them back as they came off, but if your going to adjust them up it doesn’t really matter. Moving the adjusting arm on the spline anticlockwise looking from the rear will give you more lift if your out of adjusting thread.
 
The starter will come off with the bolts, but you dont need to take it out just leave it in the hole after taking the bolts out. Easily done with the wheel off through the arch.
