Wise ones, I'm a little upset.
Changed all the oils on my T2 this weekend, just finished with the gearbox oil.

The little magnet on the drain plug held some small metal parts - but also a bunch of very small ball bearings (1mm or so across).
Never noticed anything wrong with the gearbox, it is as grunty as ever.

Should I be worried?

I have yet to strip a T2 box, but that size of ball can only come from a ball thrust washer, maybe this is the lay shaft rattle that many experience, but most of mine have had this rattle and never caused a problem, will try and look at the box drawings later to see if I can identify it, Rick

Had a quick look at the manual, yes it does indeed look like the rear layshaft thrust washer, the front looks similar but made of very short needle rollers the line drawing for the rear is less defined but it is the only position I can see for this type of washer/bearing, Rick

I once found bits of metal on the drain plug of my rear diff, it's been over a year (I think) and done three laning trips since then, maybe they skimped on rust proofing to bomb proof the dtive train :nenau:lol
